Audio subscription options (plugins,samples)

I couldn’t find a thread where we discussed online subscription services for plugins, samples etc (not Spotify / Apple Music etc)

I’ve seen a few adverts for kilohertz and there’s the obvious Roland cloud , websites like splice etc. Some offer subscription and some have rent to own.
I also filled in a questionnaire recently and they displayed a list of services , there must’ve been 20 most of which I’d never heard of

Anyone using them ?
The small experience ive had on Roland cloud sounded very nice.

I think the Plugin Alliance ones offer the best values for money. i don’t use any of them though.

For a big studio it might pay off to buy one set of plug-ins to be able all the time to work on projects, and additionally use a subscription, in case there is a quite fluctuating number of people working and needing those plug-in licences only for a short period of time. Problem is, after stopping the payment, most services are closed down as well and plug-ins don’t work anymore.

On the other hand I think that sample library subscriptions are a great option.

We can get exactly the samples as needed without the need to buy complete packs and have a lot stuff included, which would not find its way to the work. AFAIK all those services grant a livetime royalty free use under particular conditions and let the user download the samples.

Warning … rant coming …

I try to avoid any software subscription service generally, because it’s a game changer in the negative way.

For a single user it’s like granting a pension to the developer without forcing him to improve products. It’s even worse, because some services are closed down, if the payment stops and old projects can’t be edited anymore. IMO some software developers came to the point to acknowlege that there is no more great improvement possible, because their products are already mainstream and packed with so many features that adding to this makes often just no sense. Here I think of Avid, Adobe, Microsoft Office and others. They want to have money to be paid continuously for no obligation to improve significantly and keeping the user work hostage. IMO this is unethical business, but this is my personal oppinion of course.

End of rant

Do people here use sample services like Splice or arcade if so which is best and can you simply download the samples?

I like Noiiz sample packs. The quality is pretty good and if you go to Samplephonics website (team behind Noiiz service) you can find this link and get unlimited downloads for a year - only 59$ for almost 500 packs in different styles - it’s ridiculously cheap!

Also - didn’t have chance to use it yet but Tracklib looks interesting and unique, for a subscription fee you’re getting not only access to songs (yes, there are original songs not just royalty free samples) database but also samples clearance so you can release music commercially.

Thank you this is exactly why I asked!

Samplephonics made a lot of great stuff

Yes, they did! And it’s a bit sad that they’re stopped to release new packs and focused on that Connect plugin. Nothing bad with the plugin itself but seems like development requires a lot of effort and resources so I guess they just decided to stop releasing samples for a while.
