Hi!
I’m a new OT owner but in my younger years had a MD/MM combo (please elektron if you read this - bring back the MM!!). The previous elektron experience has helped me tons, as well as merlins amazing guide. I’m a manual reader so I dont mind doing the research myself but I am a bit stumped on this one and don’t want to invest too much time in the wrong direction.
So here is my dilemma: I sample off of youtube and spotify (I dont have plans on releasing my music) by running the line out to my OT. My memory is hazy but iirc, when I had a MPC, I could sample loads of sounds and keep the ones I wanted saved to the project and discard the others. From what I can tell with the octatrack, the best way to go about having a sample session where you’re just sitting at length and snipping little bits of things you like - then discarding the ones you decided not to keep would be saving to a new project with the samples. The problem is the unused samples aren’t deleted.
Does anyone have any workflow tips in regards to that? collecting a large number of samples and sorting/deleting the ones you dont like? I have my OT routed into ableton and use ableton as a glorified sound editor so I could do all my sampling and sorting in ableton if it came down to it. Its just… you dont know what a sample is capable of until you’ve put it thru the OT
Any advice or pointers on where to look in the manual would be great!
I don’ think there’s a “delete unused” feature in the audio editor. I guess best workflow as it stands would be to set up a a part with T1 using a flex machine assigned to it’s recorder buffer so you can play what you just put into ram instantly sample, chop, jam, if you like it go in the audio editor save it with the “save and don’t assign” or whatever the command is called so it can be stored permanently in the audio folder but isn’t yet taking up any of your flex or static slots. Then later when you wanna build a track you can pop into the folder and browse through all the decent samples.
There’s not really an “easy” way no matter which way ya look at it. you’re either taking sample in slowly by pre jamming with them then saving them for later use. or youre going in hot filling a folder with potential garbage and have to sift through it later. Crate digging indeed
I should add you can remove a sample from a flex or static slot in the audio editor if you run out of room or find sounds you’re not using.

thank you for the reply! edit: thought i found a workaround, but you’re right - your method works and is probably the route to take

Well you can Do a collect samples to project folder after you’ve chosen them and built some tracks. then your audio folder would be the riff raff to delete. that doesn’t require a second set.
Project>System>Card Tools allows you to delete/reorganize files just in case you weren’t aware of it
Thank you. As I’ve spent the day messing around with it, I’ve come to realize the same holds true for all the elektron machines. Do what you can with you got and wait and see if you discover more vs. trying to get the machine to do your bidding
I appreciate the card tools tip, it’s the last place I would have looked and I wasn’t aware!
