I wish! Not from anything ive tried. The app is just as bad when it comes to that. Still a little shocked the update also reinstalled all the factory presets i deleted.
If itās anything like the app used for other of their instruments, I think called midi control Center, you need to save whatever changes you do in the app, like export your custom pack or preset or whatever it is called there, and then you can import it back after the update and not lose any of your previous work.
Roger that i think its generally the same but my thing is specifically related to the front button preset categories and theres no logical access to those lists as far as ive been able to tell.
I love everyone weighing in with ideas thank you!
Iām pretty sure you can backup your presets AND their arrangement, order, etc as as a Sound Bank in Astrolab Connect.
At least, this is how it works in PolyBrute Connect.
The one possible difference is that it seems that Astrolab Connect is only available as a mobile app ā which I would find super annoying.

Thx @pmags i shall revisit connect to see if it works. Hopefully any new updates wont reinstall presets I deleted
Yes, this is what I was thinking⦠I donāt have an Astrolab, but I have a PolyBrute and Minifreak⦠Iād imagine the Astrolab Connect would work like PolyBrute Connect and Minifreak V??
Ok so i tried astrolab connect again but it doesnt order the presets in the way that im wanting. I cant reorder the any presets in any list. When i click on āby typesā which corresponds with the preset button list, i cannot move them. I can like, edit, add to playlist:
Nor can i reorder a bank, such as āuserā:
My desired use maybe is not a popular one but what i want is to, for example, boot up the astrolab and then if im wanting say a piano sound, i want to press the āpianoā button on the front panel and be able to have a list of the piano presets i like, in the order i like at that press of a button/scroll with the thermostat.
I figured out how to rename presets/delete presets to get the order i wanted on each preset button (piano, e.piano, organ etc). However, installing the new firmware 1.3 not only overrode all of that but it also reinstalled all the factory presets back into that list in some unpredictable order.
Playlists can get me an order of the presets i like but i want to limit menu diving with the big knob. The last preset button on the front takes me to playlists BUT this is also completely lame imo. It just shows a list of the playlist presets but I cant see what instrument they are (see below). And if you try to back out to see the preset, it boots out to the last preset i was on.
Maybe im too left-handed, incorrigible, and bitchy, but this suxxxxxxx
That sounds pretty frustrating!
Have you posted a query about this on the Arturia forums?
Have you tried ordering them the way you want like you did before the update, then going into the app, exporting that, then next time thereās an update you can revert to your previously saved and curated settings?
You can test this just do a couple of changes, do the app thing, import whatever else is there to override your settings again, then bring back your own and see if your changes remain the way you had them, if they do, then do the work, save and stay happy no update will ever break your work again!
I posted something about something quite awhile ago and never got any response. Other users on that forum say that arturia doesnt chime in.
I have emailed support but im not confident they will say much because i know they wont be able to help me get my previous state back and the majority of my email was sort of discussing above workflow that id like.
Tech support is probably busy enough with real problems hehe
Guess how many times it took me to connect to astrolab connect? A million (at least 10). It kept telling me i was givint wrong unlock code which is printed on back of astrolab. I definitely was entering the right code.
Also: if one wishes to use analog lab to audition sounds, like, delete etc, if you like a preset in the list youre scrolling through, it kicks you back to the top
Of the liked presets thus losing your place in the list you were auditioningā¦.so i have to remember the neighboring preset to re-find my place. Am i crazy or is this not ideal?
Anyways, its super buggy but im hanging on because i believe!
Ok @Philip i think this is a smart move. Will do if i can. Thx and thx everybody for all the troubleshooting and putting up with my 1st world problemsā¦.
A few months later, with a bunch of new Astrolab users and also the release of new MIDI keyboard controllers⦠can someone offer new thoughts or point to a good comment, video or article discussing the Astrolab vs separate controller + software dilemma?
Quick background: Iām considering Astrolab vs Keylab MK3. Iām aware of the differences in price and features. Iām still considering the Astrolab as an āeasy modeā to just turn it in and play / play around vs a āmore involved modeā where I switch on my Linux PC and dive into Bitwig instruments and/or Analog Lab running as VST. And Iām hesitant enough to ask here for more thoughts.
If you donāt mind carrying your computer go the MK3 route. If you do go the AstroLab route. Thereās not much more to think about.
Ive weighed in probably way too much in this thread and you probably can imagine my thoughts but
I think if you dont mind being tethered to the computer, then the mapping arturia have done for the mk3 to the V collection synths would be a definite step up from astrolab in terms of amount of tweakable knobs. And general mapping to daws and i wouldnt doubt some decent generic mapping to other plugins.
But for me for now i am liking just being able to turn on astrolab and not touch a computer screen, launch a daw or app. Pseudo hardware!
But i could still see myself switching to the keylab mk3 if i continue to dislike the way astrolab interfaces with analog lab and/or many many other bugs i havent even discussed(!) dont get worked out. I assume they will though cuz arturia seems like such a solid company and i think they are very committed to making astrolab happen.
@mncrmo @sjvl Thank you for your answers. Today I went to a shop to compare the Astrolab and Keylab mk3 hardware. The Astrolab keyboard felt slightly better, but for someone at my (basic) keyboardist level Iām sure it wonāt make any difference after a couple of days. The KeyLab knobs and faders feel good, and the controller feels good quality overall.
A factor Linux users have to consider is software compatibility. I did some pre-tests at home the day before and Arturia software seems to work pretty decently on Linux + Wine + yabridge (unlike NIās, the reason why Iām not considering their otherwise interesting controllers). The Astrolab is especially interesting if you want to forget about your PCās OS. Then again, for the price difference, with the KeyLab I could have a dedicated Windows/Apple setup just for it.
So I went for the KeyLab 61 mk3 (black) and now Iām trying to see if itās possible to polish the few nuances on Linux ā see Status of KeyLab mk3 & Analog Lab on Linux - KeyLab - The Sound Explorers Community. For the most part, it works well, with good sound, good CPU performance, and all controllers functioning.
Awesome @icaria36 ! Nothing better than just being able to go and get a feel for them. Congrats on the 61 and may linux deliver for you!
Hmmmm upgrade price for v collection x is $169 right now for me (maybe you too?) and includes the new synthx v elka synthex emulationā¦.i think they got me!
Couldnāt take it anymore! Sold it:).
I can definitely scroll through and read through your other issues, but would you be willing to share some of the things that you havenāt yet mentioned? Of course itās totally cool if not, since youāve already moved on.
I am just trying to decide if I need to own this. Iām a huge fan of / owner of the V Collection.
