Are Neumann KH120’s still best bang for buck?

…not saying, they’re magic…i’m stating, from more than a decade working frequently with them, in my all proper prepped studio, as also in various appartment/hotel rooms while touring, they are precisely accurate, super solid sturdy and translate pretty decently to same outcoming sonic results in all sorts of enviroments…if u only place them correctly for sweet spotting in a classic same distance between them angled towards u equals same length to listening position triangle, ears on same height to bridging gap between their 5/6" main drivers and their hi tweeters…

worx like a charme within all distances from 90 cm to 250 cm…
THE classic nearfield…
AND they offer indeed the exact same sound response translation at low levels, too…
truu sonic microscopes…

once u half way know what ur doing in mixdown, their gentle frequency roll off below 50hz even allows u to skip all sorts of subs forever…never smushed/overbumped that damned lowest octave on big soundsystems ever since…

if u only don’t expect them to shake ur room…that’s NOT what they’re supposed to do…

I use the kh120a old ones, bought them 2nd hand without any knowledge on near field monitors. Even with first use in my untreated room (sub-optimal placement on speaker stands) i was amazed by what i heard. Well known songs sounded amazingly different, layers never heard before revealed themselves. I found a 2nd hand 750 sub and added that, still in an untreated (living) room. I
rarely use them loudly, and i often turn the sub down in relative volume quite a bit. For me, this results in a very pleasant listening/producing environment, with good mixes as a result. They regularly travel with me in their original boxes (sub too!) to other living rooms for cooperative sessions. These do get loud and then I find you do need the sub for the full spectrum for listening and enjoyment. I bet one could get by without sub and mixing on low volume and get superb mixing results.

Any Neumann KH owners/users in Berlin? Or anyone based in Berlin who might want to buy some KH monitors some day and are generally familiar with studio monitors in home or professional environments?

I’m working with Neumann and we are looking for people to participate in some user tests of Neumann room correction software. If you’re interested in participating and are free for 60 min on 11th or 12th of December, please PM me!

What’s in it for you:

  • help make Neumann’s products better
  • see the inside of a very cool studio from a very renowed berlin-based electronic/acoustic collective (where these tests will take place)
  • meet me, i’m nice i promise
  • compensation: I can’t speak openly yet about whether or not these tests are compensated in any way, but at some point soon i will be able to.

PM me if you’re interested.
James

MA-1 user here with two setups: KH750 & KH120A (mid size room) and KH80 (small room). Also using NDH30.
I’d love to participate here, but can’t, as I’m based in Zürich.

Yes I’d be interested in attending too, love my KH120’s and thinking about adding the KH750, but alas I am in the UK

Hey folks, I need to buy monitors, my room is quite small (7m^2) and even not symetrical with a window not far from my listen point.

I was pretty interested by the Neumann 80 with the calibrate mic:
https://www.thomann.de/fr/neumann_monitor_alignment_kit_2.htm?gad_source=1

But I just saw this cyber week bundle offer (with the 120)

The difference is 250 euros and I tell myself it’s worth it. In your opinion, is the 120 will always be better than the 80, or the 80 would be more appropriate for a small space?

The 120 will be fine in a small space too, 5” woofer and with room calibration, you should be golden.

I’d take the KH 120II.

I pulled the trigger! 15 mins before the end of the cyberweek :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

So now, I’m searching some desk fixations that are not too expensive.
Something like the LH 65 but cheaper

What do you guys use?
