Are Neumann KH120’s still best bang for buck?

why is sonar better?

I don’t use a sub with the 120s and honestly don’t miss one. Requires extra care of the room soundwise, too.

I’m not sure what the technical difference is but I found SW to sound more neutral. I have used SW for a long time though so it might just be me.

Instead of buying a sub you could download the uncrippled FabricVerb demo and strap that on your final output. Impulse response of being stood in centre of empty 2nd big London nightclub room. Brutal soundcheck on your low end

Also don’t you need an Ipad(makes me question their entire software approach) to do the Neumann DSP stuff?

I did not try it but you have to connect all your speakers to your network via lan cable and use their software on ipad via wlan plus their mic if you have. Indeed a little bit weird.

You don’t need an iPad. If you get the measurement microphone you can use the automatic alignment software (which is really incredible) on your desktop computer. No iPad needed. You can do manual adjustments in that application as well.

The iPad app is only for manually changing settings. And it’s an OR thing. Or you use the mic plus auto alignment desktop application. or you use the ipad app.

LAN connection to control DSP is common for this kind of thing. It’s really as simple as connecting the speaker/sub to the same network as your computer and that’s it.

I recently got the kh750 and the alignment software guides you through the measurements is great and very easy. And the end result has been mind blowing.

Ahh did not know that. But you have to buy their software or their mic right? Can‘t use their software with the sonarworks mic?

Yeah the software is free but you have to use their mic with it. You get a specific calibration profile that the software will use, just like sonarworks uses their own calibrated mic for best results.

They are still pleasing to listen to, even if they are flat. I love my KH120s.

I’ve demoed my 120s against some Yamaha monitors that were extremely clinical or maybe harsh in comparison.

Does anyone know of some quality bags to carry these in?

A bag to carry studio monitors? The KH 120s are kind of heavy to be lugging around

I got bags and cases for all my gear. I prefer bags over cases for most things to keep the weight as low as possible plus they end up taking less space.

Edit: Apparently Neumann had a bag but stopped producing them. :slightly_frowning_face:

Do you know if the app is available for Android? Can only find info for iOS.

My room is 2,7x2,7, amaturely treated with absorbers and bass traps and if I keep the volume at a level where you can still talk normally they sound fantastic.

We are moving soon into our house, having a bigger room there I was thinking to add the dsp-sub for more low-end.

I think it’s iOs only for mobile devices. I run it on osx. Not sure if there’s a windows version. You don’t necessarily need an iOS device so if you have osx it’s fine

I use them with the kh750 sub. It makes an enormous difference both for the DSP room correction (kh120 II come with it built in) and for the enormous low end. For producing kicks and bass it makes you feel the music. I also find it helps me mix my low end better. The sub does not feel overpowering, but rather just helps me identify issues in the low end that I can’t otherwise hear.

Dang… PC & Android user.

Maybe I just get the standard sub and call it a day

…my nr. 1 near field monitoring choice since their first release day…round about 12 years ago…
it’s the next level ns10 universal box of this century…a truu studio standard, even in days of uberofferings and an endless array of other brands…
these carry a heavy name in music gear and therefor got all the decades old knowhow in building solid broadcasting speakers of klein & hummel built in from their get go…
a truu no brainer…

if u wanna use them everywhere u go, yes u can, get that perfectly suited bag case, too…
and they will serve u well, no matter where, no matter what…
once u know them well, u even don’t need any perfectly treated accoustic room around u anymore…
that basic rule of half of what u hear is always the room ur sitting in, is almost not valid with these…

never experienced such a precise and deep stereo stage with full range frequency reference… without any measurement procedures/gimmicks…once u listen to some of ur favourite tracks, u really start to feel and know them…no self resonance trouble double speak or any phase incontinuity EVER…!
and if u follow the most basic sweetspot triangle how to set them up rules, ur always good to go…

Well, this is exaggerated and only partly applies to really low listening levels. I love them too, but these aren’t some sort of magical boxes.
