it will be interesting to see what the fold line looks like in real life/after extended use. a buddy has one of the foldable phones and the fold line looks so strange and cheap to me. i wouldnt be too surprised if apple figured it out but at the same time wouldnt be too surprised if its the same kind of thing.

I think it’s a neat idea, but I need something a bit more durable and pocketable for my uses. Would be hard not having all the cameras or paying that much and not getting the new aperture control of the iPhone 18 Pro.
I can’t imagine a crease not developing especially with heavy users.
Otherwise I like the idea but seems liked it’s designed to require screen replacements, whereas even my OG iPad from 2009(?) still looks like new (even if unused now).
I like it quite a bit. I always wanted the Surface Duo, but it was ahead of its time and gone too soon, maybe the market just wasn’t there yet. This seems like a solid take on it.
Do the two screens have the same ratio as the iPads? Looks similar, but if not that means developers will have to develop for more screen sizes, or just leave empty black bars on the sides. And even if the ratio is the same, at least one of them is a lot smaller (not sure how the unfolded compares to the mini).
Beyond that, I’m failing to see any real benefits, unless maybe it does turn out to be an iPhone and iPad rolled into one. Still not a fan of the iPad mini screen size though, things can get tiny depending on the developer.

No it’s quite a non standard aspect ratio. One tidbit however is that the outer screen aspect ratio is the same as the opened aspect ratio.

That seems significant, and a smart move. If they manage to bring Logic to it, with a workable interface, my interest will go from about 8% to 80%.

Folding phones are still not worth it. Eventually the screen will break, I had two Samsung folds and swore off the technology because it’s not there. It’s amazing in use but you have to baby the device every time you use it.I’m back to the slab, can’t say the duo from apple does anything for me. Phones are just boring now.
Give me a decent phone with keyboard again and I be happy. At least it look different

MS are idiots, the way they designed that device was awful. I love the design, but the materials used and the folding back to make a call or receive was stupid. To having dinner of the biggest software I experience.
But I much prefer the two screens with a hinge than a proper folding phone.

It certainly looked like a very impressive engineering achievement in the presentation and the effect when switching screens is nothing short of stunning. But as many before me have pointed out, I‘d be scared shitless to damage it accidentally and for my taste there are ways to get much more enjoyment out of >2000€.

I just loved the form factor personally, never really researched into the UI aspect. Makes sense that it didn’t stick around I suppose.

I’m 1. not interested in spending anywhere near $2k on a phone - until recently that was music production laptop money.
And 2. if I were going to spend that kind of money on a phone I’d want it to have a really good camera. Not a good enough camera where I don’t feel the compromise most of the time.
That’s not a knock against the duo. I have a friend who works in pharmacy and has the 17pro. We were talking a few months ago. He said he just uses his phone for 95% of his computing needs nowadays and sometimes it would be nice to have a bigger screen that can open two windows. Perfect phone for someone like that, where this isn’t upgrading their phone, it is taking them off their laptop for that last 5%.
Since I work in finance - spreadsheetz all day everyday with advanced functions where I really want a dedicated numpad- and use a laptop/desktop for production/gaming, that’s not going to be me.
In fact, I just got out of apple last year. Was offered a killer deal where the (then) 4 month old Pixel 10pro was $400 after trade in - a trade in which Google offered me $200 more for my iphone 13 than apple would. I jumped on that and I’m happy even though it’s the most I ever spent on a phone. Nothing is coming along that significantly outclasses it for anything I do this year - mostly a point and shoot camera on steroids. Hope that’s not too off-topic.

This is where I’ve shot myself in the foot. I tend to agree, but then realize I dropped this much on an OP1-F. And as much as I like to make music, I use it drastically less than the phone that goes everywhere with me.
An important distinction here is, no this isn’t further justification to drop that much on a phone. There’s simply far cheaper, arguably more reliable options out there than a foldable. But when looking at it as a pure “how far is my dollar going” I do think a phone (any phone) goes further in my daily life.

Since this is a musical forum, I’ll add that I am sceptical that developers will adapt their current iPad only apps to work with only the iPhone Duo, but maybe I’m wrong. This significantly reduces the appeal for me at this time. Would rather just stick to an iPhone + an iPad. For 2k you can basically get a recent refurbished or used iPhone + iPad of whichever size + a Mac.
