Apogee Boom - 2 in, 2 out audio interface

Anyone else have experience with it?

I picked one up on sale for $200 (retail $300). Initial impression is that the DAC is a noticeable step up from my previous Scarlett 3rd gen and Komplete audio 6. On the Boom, the low end is tighter/clearer, there’s increased stereo separation, and things are sounding more “3d”. I was not expecting such a big jump in sound quality, although I anticipated a subtle improvement at least based on Apogee’s reputation

One inconvenience is that only the main outs OR headphones can be used, and you can only switch by plugging/unplugging headphones. I never really use both at a time, so it’s minor for me, but I wish there was a physical switch. I can see how that would be annoying, possibly a deal breaker for some. My concern is the wear on the port, but connections feel solid for now. Regardless, i’m happy with the Boom so far based on the sound quality alone. I haven’t even tried the DSP or mic pre yet, but they seem to be well regarded based on reviews I’ve read and Apogee’s specs

I think it’s likely you’re hearing the headphone amp.

If you want to actually test the difference in recording quality, you can easily do that using the same settings and just A/B with the same headphones via the same output.
