Hollow Ground Productions has released a few Aphex production videos. All of his videos tend to go into some ’more advanced sound design / process in Ableton.
Aphex Twin was absolutely unbelievable at Forwards Festival in Bristol tonight I cannot imagine a more intense and brilliant performance of anything, really. It was sonic carnage out in a big park - the volume and intensity of the bass was thrilling, felt like it could be heard for miles around.
I was right in front of the sound desk and thought it sounded amazing, especially for outdoors! Really enjoyed it.
I loved the faces given the Aphex treatment on the visuals too! Local(ish) south west legends like Stephen Merchant, Ricky Gervais and Bill Bailey (cracked me up!). Massive Attack & Tricky were more obvious, but mind blowing was seeing the Wurzels as RDJ and even my old mate Danny Wainwright (highest ollie skateboard world record holder for many years). That was bloody unexpected!
I thought the whole event was really good, especially as it’s not really a “festival”, more a two night concert.
Leftfield were a slight disappointment, but probably only because I was with my daughter who got a bit crowd phased at that point so couldn’t get forward enough for decent audio/visuals.
Was very unimpressed with the crowd’s lack of reaction to Bobby Gillespie’s dedication to Mark Stewart during Primal Scream’s set. Bloody Phillistines!!
That was brilliant, I love that RDJ throws in these moments of surrealist comedy and other palette-cleansers between the walls of screwface breaks and techno. I loved seeing the crowd boo to Boris and Charles and roar with joy for the Wurzels.
Wish I could remember it.
Is it true Aphex Twin recorded his later stuff on a computer and arranged the samples in a DAW? He doesn’t use hardware now?
completely incorrect lol. on his latest soundcloud tracks, he’s been commenting that it’s all live hardware jams
I read on the net his Richard James Album was exclusively done on a computer. I don’t know if this was a one off or he’s continued to stray from hardware. What hardware is he using on his latest stuff?
RDJ album was a big change for him, going from mostly hardware recording to mostly digital processing, presumably making heavy use of computers, but later albums seem to have gone back more towards mostly using hardware.
Thanks. Im trying to decipher what he’s using on his latest stuff. A Cirklon sequencer? But the drums are they old stuff like 808’s 909’s?
that was 27 years ago! it’s an insanely long list. look up the syro instrument list, the bblr ep artwork, and some of the names of his soundcloud tracks. lots of cirklon, arp 2500, buchla 200/200e, serge modular, synthi 100, eurorack, some elektron boxes, etc, etc, etc. there’s an interview that dropped around syro (the crazy long one) that goes into more depth
he uses all sorts, I think he used quite a bit of Rytm on the Collapse EP and he’s been using a cirklon heavily for a while.
I get the Cirklon vibe on his latest stuff. Still not sure on the instruments though.
One of the best tracks for sure.
