AnalogFX SER-2020 - Synton Syrinx inspired analog synth

Here’s a demo video of the AnalogFX SER-2020, an analog synth inspired by the Synton Syrinx. Maybe you find it useful.

I just ordered one. Stumbled across it while looking for a new mono synth and there’s surprisingly little about it anywhere online, especially considering that it looks and sounds bloody fantastic!

When I realised it was a new synth, I was expecting to find a Sonic State or Loopop video or something, but there’s literally only a handful of YouTube videos on it which are all basic sound demos, and I can’t find a single written review from anyone that reads as if they’ve actually used it. The filter section looks like it’s worth the cost of admission alone.

Very excited to try it out!

Awesome! Had my eye on this too and was surprised their weren’t many vids. Perfect circuit has them, maybe I’ll try one since I’m local.

Let us know your impressions when you get it!

Will do! With any luck it’ll arrive tomorrow :exploding_head:

The SER-2020 has been on my radar for the past several months. It is one of the few mono synths presently on my wish list.

Oh, yes. As I’m also very interested in the SER, I would be thankful for a report first hands. :+1:

My 2 cents and a disclaimer in advance: This synth has been inspired by the legendary Synton Syrinx, but as I’ve never owned or played one, my opinion is based only on my experiences as a user.
The Analog FX SER-2020 delivers a great vintage sound with a very particular character. Its nasal LP-Filter sound reminds me slightly of the one that can be found in Korg’s MS-line (the later one) but the SER-2020 is a bit tamer overall. The oscillators also have a hint of Roland SH-101, especially when listening to that hollow Pulse-wave. One unique feature of the SER-2020 is certainly the formant mode in which you are able to create vocal-like tones with the two resonant BP-filters. You can assign different vowels to certain keys which is quite nice.
But also without that mode, the SER-2020 offers a truly organic vibe which sometimes is hard to find in modern analog synthesizers. An extensive mod matrix with lots of patch points makes it also a great companion for modular systems. Considering its feature list, and that AnalogFX is a boutique company, the well-built SER-2020 offers a good price-performance ratio. Plus, it even supports MPE! Something, I, unfortunately, couldn’t demonstrate in this video, though.

Ah - on a side note: Build quality is good

I’ve just had a couple of hours with it, but I’m very happy! It’s a very, very odd synth and I mean that in the best possible way. The lpf is quite aggressive and almost sounds a bit resonant even with the resonance off. The two BP filters and all the filter routing options really open up the sound design possibilities a huge amount, and I’ve made some pretty wild sounds by just messing with the filter section alone!

The oscillators are really nice and beefy, giving the whole synth a very pleasant tone.

I’ve still got a lot to discover here, but I’m definitely getting the impression this one is going to be somewhat irreplaceable as it’s like nothing else. I’ll see about doing a video soon!

Great to hear! Curious how you’ll feel once the honeymoon phase wears off. Unless that isn’t something that happens for you.

Sometimes the honeymoon phase is like a drug for me, I swear, and I’m over the moon about a new synth only to not really use it after a bit. Even if it’s a great synth, the honeymoon wearing off messes with me!

I generally know within the first hour if something is going to really click with me, and if it does then I’ll use it for absolutely everything forever. I had that with the Virus, and with Serum, which are pretty much the only two synths I use now unless I’m feeling experimental or I want something very specific.

I got the Ser-2020 because I was looking for an analogue mono synth that could scratch the itch that my SE-02 left behind when I had to sell it, and I had bought an MFB Kraftzwerg which got lost on the post, before I stumbled across this, and so far it’s really hitting the spot I hoped it would hit!

Here’s a thing I’m working on at the moment:

Every sound you hear is from the SER-2020, including the drums. I’ve done a bit of processing on various sounds - mostly EQ, some saturation, and bits of chorus and reverb, but that’s about it.

I am totally in love with this synth now. It’s really something special.

I’m ordering one of these from Juno records. With the great dollar to pound ratio this is a great deal.

I’ve just released two tracks (basically two variations on one track) made entirely with this synth, and included the stems as a free download:

I totally forgot about this…ordered from Juno…thanks for the push!

I really liked the SER-2020…sold it but might get it back!

Wow, I had completely missed this thing. It sounds awesome.

Stazma did a video on the SER-2020 over in his thread.
