Analog Rytm OS 1.70 Upgrade

Everything sounds tighter now, for the lack of a better word. AR used to sound reminiscent of loosely tuned drums, now everything slaps tightly. No idea how much of this is in my head, but I noticed the changes before I actually read about them.

at the end of the last calibration i tried, the display was showing, for both toms and filters (2/2):…skip and not failed as it did at the beginning with RMS
what’s the meaning of ‘skip’ in this case? not sure it has anything to do with the firmware but rather the AR itself :confused:

So disappointed to discover that it’s not a Euclidian sequencer at all! Just spreads them to the nearest 1/16 note! Surely with micro timing this would have been possible to implement properly. Was so stoked when I read the release notes, but it’s not at all what’s advertised. What a shame. Am I missing something?!

Euclid is clearly also disappointed.

Could it be classed as ‘quantized euclidean’?

It would be nice if someone could make a direct comparison to know how much the audio quality changed.

Ha! Guess so, but it sort of is or isn’t Euclid really. It’s not like RYTM can only do 16th notes though, surely with micro timing they could do this properly? Ah well, just really gutted! Did I mention that…

maybe it’s possible - an option for quantized or not would be nice.

As 1000 have already said, I’m blown away by this update. Have a mk 1 but even the sound (perhaps just the calibration) seems even better than before.
The Euclid-esque sequencing is fun, but need more time with it.

Dare I say this easily muscles the Rytm into the same hallowed space as the MD/MNM in terms of sheer scope of capabilites …

I was also surprised but with 2 pulse generators creating 2 micro timed steps on the same trig, it would have been hard to deal with I guess. A sensible solution could have been: generator 1 uses micro timing by default. The second generator only adds trigs on freely available steps.

Somebody said it would have been nice to get a velocity setting for the second pulse, I thought the exact same thing.

But in the end, I’m really happy with the actual system. It still brings new live possibilities (You can place trigs, then turn on/off Euc, turn on/off one of the pulse generator so almost 4 different patterns available per track, that’s huge I think!) & new ideas. We’re spoiled!

Perversely, only now the Rytm has Euclid-esque features, it dawns on me as a dream box to use with the Torso T-1…

Bjorklund’s algorithm arranges the varying durations for maximal evenness. For example, k = 7 and n = 16 produces: [ 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0 ]

This is exactly what you get when setting PL1 to 7 on a 16-step sequence on the AR.

Anyone else switched from HH Lab to an old hihat machine and thought wft is going on? I never was a fan of the Rytm’s hats, they’re fine for weird noises and for layering with samples, but I never liked them for standard hihat duties. No big deal, the thing plays samples, but HH Lab is really different…

Ok this is super interesting. So am I just totally wrong then? I thought from playing briefly with other Euclidian plugins in the past that it spread them completely evenly, but this article seems to suggest it’s always “as evenly as possible” depending on relationship between n&k, and the limitations of that are a key feature of what makes something actually Euclidian…! Doh!

n could have been 16*microsteps (I think 24? so 384)

I even get 303 type sounds out of it (sid engine), that sound close enough, very very nice, overal the tuning is so much better now, it was the biggest contra to the rytm, and the reason i bought the tempest. Its now 200% better than before. Thank you! (Tempest is still awesome, but Rytm is now a real Killer device.)

so… where is the e25 AR edition?

wishlist:

  1. MK1 form factor (a la Octatrack) /black
  2. no features from the mk2 except for the fill button, control all knob, display and the func/track buttons inverted
  3. lower price point than mk2
  • if possible better pads

I’m used to Euclidean meaning “as evenly as possible within a timing constraint” not just “evenly spaced.” But that’s from the academic literature. I’m not sure what other products do.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but for euclidean mode, the knobs are extra sensitive! I barely turn them and the values jump. The knobs aren’t that sensitive in any other mode, it seems. Hard to dial in the right amount without precision!
