waldorf pulse 2 no doubt
Iâve owned a lot of synths, and I keep coming back to my good olâ DSI Mopho. It sounds brilliant. Thick as hell and a good price point too.
This is coming from a guy who just bought a Sub 37. The Moog is brilliant, btw, but for the price, Mopho is the way to go. The only problem is the desktop model basically needs a computer to edit it properly. But the keyboard version is a lot more hands on.
No computer editing with the Waldorf Pulse 2. Matrix style editing works fine!
I have owned Mini/microbrute, bass station 2, moog, analog 4, volca bass)
conclusion best bang for buck = waldorf pulse 2
but thatâs just my opinion
Im close to pulling trigger on pulse 2. Can it do 303 style sounds?
Shure, the resonance of the filter is WTF :D.
Also the drive (tube and fuzz) is extremely nice and the transients are very fast.
Add me on FB and maybe Iâll show you
Bandmate has Minotaur and it always cuts through his Electro Acid mix , yet not too harsh at all.
Check Studio Electronics Boomstar series. All analog, but maybe slightly over your budget. I have the 5089, âMoogishâ clone. Its got 2 OSCâs and no1 can put out 2 waveforms !
I also play a DSI Mopho x4 keys in a live band. Very full and warm w proper filter adjustment, despite DSI rep for crispness or "lack of warmthâ
Most boxes can get close to a 303 ( Iâm not really into it) but stop chasing that sound.
Given the description, and above suggestion, Pulse or Minotaur might be best bet
AFAIK the 303-typical sound depends a lot on a 18 dB low pass filter with a very squelchy resonance to be sweeped through ⌠the specs of the Pulse 2 say, there is a 24 dB low pass. You might not get the identical 303 sound, but a sound that is pretty much suited for Acid-style.
Edit: sorry for wrong information about 18 dB, R7 is absolutly right âŚ
Itâs nitpicking but the 303 actually has a 24db filter. A oddly behaved 24db filter but 24db nonetheless.
The BS2 has the best off the shelf and easy to buy 101 and 303 sounds. The main filterâs closer to the 101 and the Acid filter is based on the 303. Itâs a lot of bang for your buck.
You could also look at a straight up 303 clone like the Acidlab Bassline3, x0xb0x or TT303. Limited sure but that sound is classic.
Like others have said, Minitaur, Mother 32 and Pulse 2 are also great options.
Absolutle no nitpicking ⌠You are absolutly right - I checked some sources out of curiosity, But why do people swear that the filter in the 303 was a 18dB. Is it that the design uses transistors in a different way compared to Moog, which then makes a difference soundwise? I think there is a difference.
the teebee filter is not directly comparable to other similarly specced designs. It has a unique behaviour, therefore matching it with a similarily specced filter will not yield identical results
IMHO you guys are missing what really makes a 303 sound like a 303 - which is to say the sequencer, most importantly the way the Slide and Accent parameters affect the sound while its running
i agree it has a squelchy resonance that is pretty unique, but actually the whole range of analog roland synths from the 70s-80s have that characteristic profile to some degree⌠at times it reminds me almost of a frog sound or something⌠but yeh the 303 was made super cheaply at the time, the current prices are nowhere near justified by the technology inside that thing - and i think the cheapness lends itself to the way the filter responds, which is to say somewhat âcrappyâ from a technical standpoint but iconic from a public/popularity standpoint
i really dig the old roland analog sound myself, some people dont really like it⌠the SH-5 and SH-7 are on my list of dream synths⌠along with the Synton Syrinx and EMS Synthi
in my mind the A4/AK is closer to vintage roland analog sound than a vintage moog sound, which is what i actually preferâŚ
here is a recent track i made on the AK and OT⌠skip ahead to 7:00, i was going for a bit of the 303 type sound there, and i think its similar but clearly not the same - it all has to do with the sequencer imo

I can recommend Future Retro XS
Sorry but IMHO that just sounds like any synth voice with some glide on it (cool track though), not like a teebee. But you are right, the crappy components combined with the accents and slides is what makes the teebee sound.
Still, the teebee filter is a weird one⌠the way the resonance affects the lowend, for example, itâs in a league of itâs own really!
hmm - now howâd we get into a discussion about the 303? The OP didnât mention it AFAIR
ah I would not recommend the DE 2 for deep bass sounds due it´s 12db filter. But you can get some really great analogue sounds for sure!
Aturia Minibrute has a great sine wave sub osc! and you can control it with cv via A4 or via midi from Octratrack.
yeh some people are not very keyed into the sound, they are just after the behavior⌠but it sounds like you are very into the actual sonic profile, so if thats the case Id go with a clone of some sort like an Avalon or xoxbox⌠honestly that will be the only thing to nail it if you are super obsessive about the 303
deep, fat, rubbery & rounded bass tones:
Kawai 100F or Korg MS 10
The bass of the MS 10 can be super deep and has twice the weight of the MS20. Also great for acid.
Fantastic synth.
really??
yes
just google it. everybody who heard both side by side knows this
(hope this does not sound too smartassy)
for example:
http://analogue-heaven.1065350.n5.nabble.com/MS-10-vs-MS-20-td82810.html
(some nice MS10 tricks there )
It goes along very well with the RYTM soundwise.
but this also depends what music you want to make.
people who want gear advice should always tell, what kind of sound they want to achieve
but: cv/ gate only ! (->beatstep pro, also nice as add on for the RYTMâŚ)
Bass Station 2 just gets the job done. Not the most magical filter, but great for clean basses. Does Moog/Roland and is very reliable in Live for me.
I still think the Dark energy is a great sounding mono too. Lots to choose from. I enjoyed my MS20 mini for a while, but when you just want to get something done quickly, you really canât beat the little Bass Station.
I havenât had the Pulse, but that seems like a great option too for an allrounder. The Roland 1M is still one of my fav monos atm, not analogue but the SH-2 plug was so good I sold my SH-2.
I ve got the Pulse2 as buddy for the a4 but i didnât like it. Itâs a hard-sounding synth. Actually the BS2 serves me well and as someone said with all the ccâs from the OT you can make some wired stuff.
