So I’ve had the Waldorf iridium for a few months now and I do like it quite a bit. I’ve dug in and fully understand what it’s capable of, I’ve explored all of the synth engines including the Kernel mode and there’s a plethora of possibilities…yet for some reason I’m hung up on the idea of ditching it for the XT. It started when I realized that in order to do any cross mod you have to be in kernel mode so that means no cross modulation between synth engines which was a bit of a let now given waldorf’s history I fully expected that feature to be there. Obviously in Kernel mod you can do all kinds of cross modulation: FM, AM, Wavetables etc and they do have their own dedicated envelopes separate from the included 6 which is nice but brings me to my next hang up. The lack of stages in the envelopes, again given Waldorf’s history I fully expected the 6 envelopes to have more stages than simply ADSR. I actually expected at least all of the features of the Blofeld plus the addition of all the other synth engines.
These are arguably minor hang ups but for some reason I’ve been seriously hung up on them which has had me considering swapping it for an XT. Of course if I did I would be losing a lot, I’d be stuck with only wavetable synthesis, no physical modeling no granular, no VA and no samples…which even when typing that makes me feel like it would be kind of a dumb move but still I find myself scanning eBay and Reverb for an XT and they’re essentially same price second hand.
I don’t know am I crazy,? Am I just gassing hard, what would you do?
It sounds like you really like the XT more. From what I learned once you like the piece of gear for what it is then you are more likely to use it as a workhorse. Get the gear you think about often that’s what will make you more satisfied. Specs are specs, but it’s the whole instrument rather than the sum of its parts.
Tou could take a look at M too
I would second take a look at the M and maybe wait a bit to see what XT features end up coming to it if you aren’t sold on the flavor of the M. M could pretty easily be my only poly synth, so yeah I dont think you’re crazy giving up all the power of the Iridium for something more focused like an XT. Then again maybe I’m crazy getting an M and not an Iridium
…for as much as i like the XT, i would probably consider keeping the Iridium a bit longer and see what happens next.
it’s probably not an easy choice but i think it’s relevant to consider the fact that the Iridium is a pretty new machine compared to the XT and has features, as you mentioned, that you won’t find on the XT
