I was going to sell my AH but when doing my checks I noticed the volume knob is unduly wobbly!
Still works fine but I notice a small scrape near this knob so I conclude another bit of gear has fallen onto it and hit the knob and caused the nearby scrape.
Does anyone know what is wrong?
I assume the knob is attached to the PCB via 2 or 4 solder blobs? And one of them has detached with the impact?
Has anyone opened theirs? Is it simple? Would you advise a self-repair?
unlikely, these are normally through hole connected and also have a solder ‘through hole’ chassis mount on each side… sounds more like it could be a bit of give within the pot assembly following impact, or other damage … some pots are assembled with a closing cap and lugs to secure the internals, it’s also possibly a bit of play from a dislodged lug like that … you’ll only know for sure if you investigate
otherwise explain the issue in the listing … the component itself should be relatively easy to source and replace, so for a moderately competent builder it wouldn’t be an obstacle
open it up… see what wobbles…
email elektron for the part … ive swapped an encoder on another box with little problem , but i would practice on something else…
the encoder can be carefully opened too … some small plastic ‘nuggets’ hold the enclosure together…
I agree it sounds more like the component itself than a solder joint since you say it works fine. If you can wiggle it significantly and the signal doesn’t cut in and out it’s unlikely to be a joint. It should be a fairly trivial fix.
Maybe the claw part of the stabilization bracket which holds the plastic body captive and grounds to the PCB was bent and isn’t grabbing it fully anymore but has left the guts intact and working.
Anything without eyes on it is just picking which football team you think is going to win next season though.
Also, one of the aforementioned nuggets could have gotten knocked out but I think that they’re mostly for alignment. This is a Digitakt PCB but I haven’t seen elektron use an alternate part on any of the newer devices so we can estimate that it’s likely the same style pot as this.
