Adventures in the noise rock-adjacent underground

Well to each their own I guess.

Prompted by @DonovanDwyer’s post about Th’ Faith Healers covering “Mother Sky” in the Damo Suzuki memorial thread, these videos came to mind:

For those who don’t know, Quickspace were the band who followed on from Th’ Faith Healers. That video was mostly shot on the street where I lived until I left London, as it happens.

Yeah Pop Song is fantastic. It might be another case of only me but I love how Eurythmics’ song Caveman Head always makes me think the Th’ Faith Healers (another Can connection.)

can’t believe nobody has mentioned melt-banana yet!

Now you have ! Anything you’d like to say or share about them ?

(Not being sarcastic; would like to know more as they’re a band I’ve never managed to see).

oh melt-banana is fucking sick. they’re a noise rock/punk band from japan, rlly fucking amazing

their drummer is fucking wild, mostly women in the band, the vox are sick, the guitar and noise effects work is so sick

their earlier work is more improvisational noise stuff, and the further along in their discog you go the more it becomes hardcore punk with noise influence

I saw them when I was 17 in a tiny community run event space in northern Denmark, where I was volunteering. At the time I had no idea one could make music that sounded like that. I immediately bought their CD and listened to it again and again in the following months.

I saw a lot of acts in that community run space, and not just the music, but also the attitude towards making music happen for music’s sake… that opened my eyes again and again. I would without doubt be a very different human without that place.

Kudos to everyone out there who is putting energy into happening for music’s sake

Quite a few people I know rave about their live gigs, but lack of proximity to venues for this sort of thing these days has prevented me from being in the right place at the appropriate time. Maybe one day!

Melt Banana is such a fun band. Noisy but they retain the playful aspects of punk.
I got to hang out with them after a show at the crocodile in Seattle (nearly 20 years ago now) and they were super nice and really funny folks.
They’ve played with a few drummers over the years but tend to recruit from the death metal and grindcore pools which is somehow a great fit. I saw them at a time when I was feeling like guitar may have run its course but they absolutely changed my mind.

Just read through this entire thread and was surprised I’ve been a fan of, and/or seen live half the bands mentioned here. Noise rock has definitely influenced me for over 35 years…

As far as recent shows go, the closest to that sort of craziness was HEALTH (no-input feedback mixing as part of their set) and Wata’s noise/tape delay feedback solo at the last Boris/Melvins tour. Would love to see Merzbow, Sunn O))) or similar for some full-on audio assault in the modern era.

The guitar work in Th’ Faith Healers still blows my mind today. They were a shining light in the alt-rock/grunge haze of the early 90’s.

HEALTH is also sick as fuck

Well while we’re on the subject, I’ve seen them three times (I think) first time Oshima Watchma was drumming, must have been around the time Teeny Shiny came out. Second time was the next tour, with Dave Witte drumming and that was absolutely fucking bananas. Third time was without a drummer, when it was pretty much just Yasuko and Ichiro, still good, but not quite as bananas.

Was mad into them right up to Teeny Shiny, then they started getting a bit normal. Still cool, but not as bat shit as some of the shit they were doing before. Charlie is an insane piece of work.

UGH THE DAVE WITTE ERA IS SO FUCKING GOOD i’m very envious that’s so sick

I agree Charlie is fucking wild and one of my favorites, I do really like Fetch and Cell-Scape as well. their old stuff feels like Lightning Bolt turned upside down it’s amazing

Well worth the experience. I got to DJ with him once and he was quite quiet and unassuming backstage.

This was April 1996, and the record I got at the gig was Speak Squeak Creak. I’m not really familiar with their later works, but they left a lasting impression on me.

Just found that the venue has a list of all gigs that played there going back to 1986 (!)
There is probably a few names recognizable to people here. I was lucky to attend and help iut with organising bookings, cooking, hosting bands from 1996-98. A major formative experience, and huge reason I am where I am today.

Got some almost front row seats to see them at the Barbican in April.

It’ll be about my 4th or 5th time, can’t fucking wait.

Second only to Whitehouse in terms of live intensity, but the closest I’ve come to seeing God.
