I think the encoders on the Push 3 are phenomenal! So buttery-smooth, not loose at all, perfect resistance. Does anybody know the brand, model, where to purchase? Would love to build a small custom MIDI-controller to extend with 16 more knobs.

They sell the encoders in packs of four.
They do? I don’t mean the caps/knobs, but the rotary encoders.
Fairly certain all modern Elektron is alpha analog pots for master volume and alpha encoders for everything else, I don’t know about the earlier gear, it could have been bourns or alps but while it may not be the exact same model most alpha have a green body and the picture of these machinedrum encoders I found also have a green body so probably safe to say use of alpha goes back at least as far as machinedrum mkII uw.

Thanks. The encoder from your picture (machine drum) pretty surely is the one from the first link posted above, the Bourns… ; )
could just be the angle of the photo but the bourns has a much stubbier shaft and shallower body, also the top of the D shaft has a steeper flute on the bourns from digikey, you can see the top of the MD one is a small bevel, the bourns has a greater area of beveling.
The body is definitely green and may well be bourns but not the same model.
Sometimes digikey uses file photos though, they aren’t always 100% visually representative of the exact item they’re selling so there’s also that to consider, may be more similar in practice.
Also, the newer alpha (like on digitakt, digitone, syntakt) have little green pegs coming up out of the plastic body that hold the metal bushing retainer in place so they’re totally different than either of these.
