I haven’t either but some people think the Move is based on Live, some people say it’s not to do with Live it’s based on the Note
all I know is it’s nice that it exist and nice to have another instrument like this on the market
I think boombap sometimes becomes a polarizing misnomer in our conversations and leads to some of our misconnections… as the features used for boom bap are the same for alot of other genres daft punk for example not boombap but the same feature set… really most elektronic music imo
Agreed there just as much break and loop chopping going on in dnb/jungle etc. boom bap doesn’t have the monopoly on it for sure, I’ve been slowly digging into move these last weeks and I’m really happy with how far I can get an idea before hitting the wall, I’ve got a dnb thing on the go right now that I’m picking up and putting down here and there and I’m pleasantly surprised at how much full of a sound I can get from just two drum racks and a couple of on board synths…
Yeah I mean, I’m not gonna sit here and argue against any of your concerns, because all of them are totally valid questions. I suppose I’m so happy with it that these questions just don’t factor in to my view on it.
People criticize what it doesn’t do but I’m saying it’s a game changer as it is right now! Add more stuff if they like but we are talking victory laps at this point, just my view of course.
Has anyone managed to get usb audio recording out of move’s USBC to an iPhone via a camera connection kit adaptor? I just get a charging/disconnecting cycle.
I got it to work once with my iPad Air 3 and a USB 3 Camera Connection Kit, but the next day the exact same setup didn’t work and I have no idea what changed. I’ve still got Lightning on my phone and tablet; i expect the connection would be more reliable with a proper USB C device.
I don’t know if you can turn off charging on the Move itself. However, I’ve been swapping the cable. I guess some USB cables charge and others don’t.
I have a cable that is plugged into the charger it came with and another that’s goes to my desktop. The desktop cable doesn’t charge but still controls live.
Disclaimer. I’m not tech savvy so I couldn’t tell you why one cable (or type of cable) charges and another doesn’t
I wanted to try doing an aleatoric tape music style thing completely on the Move so I banged on and strummed piano strings and recorded that onto 8 pads on a drum rack using the built-in mic. I made a 16 bar pattern at a slow tempo and captured 8 passes of improvising a part on the 16 step pads for each of the 8 samples.
BTW, quick note for anyone who hasn’t used Move. It wasn’t immediately apparent to me from the marketing or any videos I’ve watched but the “16 step mode” doesn’t limit you to 16 pitches, you can shift octaves and play and sequence up and down the entire range. It’s not limited to a couple of octaves like the Octatrack. But them calling it “16 step mode” kind of implies that it’s going to be.
Anyway then for each track I automated filter cutoff, delay send, and some playback effects, mostly ring mod and pitch envelope. On one track I even experimented with automating the playback effect type.
That already sounded full enough but then for the hell of it I resampled and lazy chopped the whole thing onto a few more pads and added those on top transposed to different pitches and filtered some more.
The only thing I really missed was the ability to reverse samples which would have added a lot to the old school tape music vibe. Pretty silly bit of fun but hopefully it goes to show that you can make something pretty dense and weird with lots of sound design options with just one clip on one track, using only the Move. Well, and a piano.
Note was based on Live in a mobile form, so Move being based on Note is not that different from being based on Live.
I do agree with @dragonaut that I think this is more a swipe at OP1 than anything MPC.
I think people see the pads and automatically assume it should cover MPC territory. If Move is expected to be like an MPC, then please step up the criticism of Chompi, because it samples too.
Anyway, I plan on ignoring speculation of what’s to come in the future of Move because Push 3 improvements took a long, very long time. Note on the other hand has had incredibly active development with small feature improvements at a very steady rate without sacrificing stability.
I’m curious what they could say in their AMA, but I’ll leave the feature requests to them to handle because it might be a while.
yeah I think that is the one thing we all agree on, nobody thinks the Move is in MPC territory
we are just discussing the lack of basic sampling instrument features… for example the Move has lazy chop which is an advanced feature we wouldn’t expect to be on the Move but some how is… everything marlow diggs and others have been asking regarding features have been more basic sampling features than the lazy chop… the issue is that when it comes to basic standards the synth basic standards are present for the most part but the sampling standards fall a little short… I even think most people would give up lazy chop if it could be replaced with some basics.
I’ve been following the conversation and I get it, but I just don’t know how quickly anyone should expect more. I think tomorrow, or hours from now, could give some insight of how to mitigate expectations.
Sampling is still relatively newish in Note. Even drum Sampler is a new device to Live. These are truly baby steps unfolding before us. Live can obviously do more so the technological capability exists in a way (in Live), but bringing that to Move or Note means they (developers) must believe it fits their vision of what Note or Move can do easily and it needs to be heavily tested for stability before launch.
I’m only saying be patient until there’s more to go on. Hopefully we all learn more tomorrow, but until then… Everyone will have at least one more feature they wish Move could do, and if implemented, then we’re at @Mistercharlie ‘s reference of Homer’s car quickly so only the developers truly know what will happen.
I copied the set I posted before and swapped the piano samples with some synth one shots I sampled the other day and changed some effects a little. So much fun! It’s a cool way to create sort of a structure of notes, effects, and automation and then plug different inputs into it. These are just individual one shot note samples but it would be interesting to try plugging longer musical phrases into a premade setup and see what comes out.
