moving…

I see what you did

Especially this. I was quite into the idea and even bought RipX a few years ago when it was new, but basically I only really use it to break down track so I can analyse what’s going on, learn the parts or jam along, most of the time I don’t think the results are usable - unless you want to use the telltale stem separation warble as a feature in your track.

I think in most instances just tried and tested filtering sounds better. I did buy stem separation for the MPC because it was so cheap that why not, but I’ve never used it.

Edit, tbf it didn’t seem like the stem separation quality really mattered that much when Francois K was doing his stems dubs, so it might just be a skill issue on my side:

You’re right. They haven’t shown anything. I think it’s more the not showing anything, and the length of time between initial “tease” (or whatever you want to call it) and product reveal, that allows speculation to run wild. Humans will human, and let their imaginations run wild building all sorts of products up in their heads.

But whatever, I still don’t like “teaser” campaigns. Drops of the blue is, imho, the best way to go about it.

Well since I am making beats just for fun without any ambitions to ever monetise them I just really like the extra flexibility stem separation is giving me. And you are right, most of the time stems sound really lofi, but sometimes that fits my boombap beats. What simpler is really missing though is pad slicing mode. Serato can slice chops during playback.

The fact that there’s a tab for it on the Ableton website is also making people think it must be something ‘big’.

Figure is amazing. But the lack of updates and progress on it isn’t. It was one of the things that drew me into iOS music making, I had high hopes for being able to port stuff from it - midi etc. Import sounds to it, things like that. Would’ve accelerated that thing to heaven

Yeah i get it. It is a cool feature i just think about the commercial implications of it and how it’s going to lead to more and more legal issues as the technology advances.

What do you mean by Pad Slicing Mode? Do you mean Manual mode in Simpler?I use this all the time on the Push. Just play my chops in by tapping on the pads just like manually chopping on the MPC.

Theres a free device for that… lazy chop mode with any hardware…

My wife kind of got the idea but turns out it was a chore…

right you need push. Another good reason for a mobile Ableton simpler groovebox.

Awesome! thanks! I guess now I have to give simpler another shot (at least as long as I am waiting for Ableton move…)

No worries :+1:

I love Simpler to bits as well (also the new Logic QuickSampler). It’s the main inspiration for my app Samplist | iOS MIDI Sample Slicer

Edit: It’s no Simpler by any means, but it was a nice exercise.

while still not perfect, some izotope rx treatment on the split stems from ripx occasionaly results in proper usable stuff. like 3 out of 10 times but still better than nothing ahah

Simpler does this with Push, i use it all the time. I guess there‘s a way to do it with other controllers as well.

When I’m on the laptop i just Slice by Region and manually adjust/edit the slice markers to suit my needs.

Yeah, to be fair unusable is probably a bit strong, it’s just usually it needs a lot of chopping and treatment to get them sounding ok. Usually I prefer the sound from filtering in the vast majority of cases, which is a lot less work.

I would love a Drumrack in a small box. 16 pads, 4-8 encoders, storage for 1000 samples. Basic suite of fx - EQ8, glue compressor, saturator, reverb, delay, auto filter, limiter and drumbuss.

Ability to store 16 patterns which can be chained to make a pseudo track but main use would be as an idea sketch pad.

Battery and usb powered.

Take my money Ableton.

I am a bit sceptical, Akai build their software around the hardware, and that makes a lot of the appeal of the solution.

I still have my push one, but never really clicked, for me its all about sound design, and that didnt make sense on it.

Waldorf Iridium shows that a very good sound deaign is possible with a gui/knob combination, and i want to see something similar from akai or Abelton, just with integrated sequencer and sampler.

Even hapax showed what good integration/ workflow is, Abelton needs to ramp up their game quiete considerably before i invest again. (Love the DAW still)
