Ableton Live instruments, Overbridge plugin, & audio latency

Apologies for posting yet another Ableton/Overbridge/MIDI thread. I didn’t see anything in the existing posts that reflect what I’m seeing.

I am working with a fairly simple setup:

  • Ableton Live 12.4.6 (Mac)
  • Arturia Keylab 88 Mk 2
  • Digitakt 1 + Overbridge (which is also my audio interface for Ableton)

I use the Keylab to play software instruments in Live. I want to integrate the Digitakt so that I can use it in conjunction with the Ableton instruments. My goal is simply to have access to the Digitakt and its sequencing for beats etc, and to play software instruments in Ableton along with it.

I am finding that when I enable the Overbridge Digitakt instrument/plugin in Ableton, it introduces MIDI input latency from the Keylab on the other instrument tracks audio latency; see Ableton Live instruments, Overbridge plugin, & audio latency - #2 by xenus_dad.

If I have any software instrument enabled on a different track, and the Overbridge plugin is not inserted on its own track, the input latency on the instrument tracks is to my ears nil (I have not been able to measure it). If I then insert the Overbridge plugin on its own separate track, a noticeable MIDI input latency gets introduced on the Ableton instrument tracks. I have not measured it, but it feels like it’s in the 20-40 ms range.

This is true even if

  • I turn off all MIDI routing to the track with the Overbridge plugin on it
  • I disable the Overbridge track (mute)
  • I disable the Overbridge plugin within the Overbridge track

If I delete the Overbridge plugin from its track, the latency on the other tracks disappears immediately.

The MIDI input latency is across-the-board, even to the Overbridge track - If I use the Keylab to play Digitakt samples, it works but there is the same latency. There is no noticeable CPU change when the Overbridge plugin is added or removed, though I don’t think that would indicate much. The MIDI input latency to the Ableton instruments is there whether transport is running or not.

I have

  • latest version of Overbridge installed to my Mac
  • Digitakt firmware 1.5.4 (latest)
  • In Ableton, no MIDI sync/tracking etc is enabled for the Elektron device for either input or output (as advised many other places)
  • In the Digitakt’s MIDI settings, I have all sync disabled (as advised many other places). The only sync happening is through the Overbridge Digitakt plugin.
  • Both the Keylab and the Digitakt are connected via their own USB cable to the Mac. There’s no hub in use.

I am not trying to do anything with MIDI on the Digitakt apart from tempo & transport sync with Ableton. I just want the Digitakt to do Digitakt things, and the Ableton instruments to be usable, and obviously to have tempo & transport sync between the two.

Any help appreciated; let me know what other information I can provide via setup/specs/settings etc. Thank you!

Bit of investigation…I think this is an audio output latency issue rather than MIDI input. When active the Digitakt/Overbridge plugin reports a latency of 63ms / 3029 samples, which would definitely be a problem for any instruments I’m running out through that.

I am going to try running his on a more powerful machine - this laptop is over 10 years old, so maybe that’s contributing. If anyone has thoughts though on audio latency issues when using Overbridge and using the Elektron device as Ableton’s audio output, any help is welcome. Thank you!
