Ableton Live 12

Blocks remains the unsung hero of Reason’s sequencer, and something like it would be a huge workflow booster in Live.

I’ve had this thought for awhile that Ableton could implement Blocks as “scenes in Arrangement” – basically every scene from Session View becomes a “paintable” loop in Arrangement View, and then you can record individual clips (like leads, vocals, etc) over those scenes.

Maybe I’ll make a YouTube video about it sometime.

I don’t have any issues finishing tunes.

Linear is the way to go to finish. Session view is for the sketchers :upside_down_face:

Maybe after Move, they’ll consider a horizontal orientation? I truly never thought they’d let go of the vertical layout, so an eventual maybe?

Can absolutely agree, especially for sound design, basic editing, it is a chore. You need to copy to Arrangement, make changes, consolidate “CMD+J” then copy/paste back to Session view.

I do understand why and how some won’t use it but I do encourage people to try it out especially as a beginner (in Live) simply because Live’s Arrangement is not as robust in options as some other hosts. The fewer immediate options could be a positive, but Session view is where they’ve added the most options.

New features and improvements:

  • Updated the design of the Hot-Swap Sample and Swap to Previous/Next Similar Sample buttons in Simpler and Drum Sampler.
    • Drum Rack presets will no longer be excluded from the Sounds label.
  • Drum Rack and Drum Sampler presets tagged with “Sounds|…” will no longer be shown in the Drums label.
  • Selecting a large number of track headers in the Session or Arrangement View is now faster.
  • “Scale” filter is now available even if Scale Mode is turned off.
  • Changed the Info View header for Help View’s home button from “Lessons Start Page” to “View All Lessons”.
  • Improved software text for sidechain buttons in Auto Filter, Compressor, Glue Compressor, Gate and Multiband Dynamics .
  • In Auto Shift, the MPE pitch bend will now use 48 semitones range.
  • Items tagged with “Devices|Drums” will now be included in the Drums label as well.
  • Selecting a large number of tracks in the Session or Arrangement View is now noticeably faster.
  • When browsing the All label, presets will once again be grouped into their respective devices. However, the grouping will be discarded when applying any filter, in favour of showing a flat list. The grouping will also be omitted when saving a custom view based on the All label.
  • Improved filtering of devices and presets.
  • A small arrow is now displayed next to a tag’s name to indicate that the tag includes subtags. When clicking on a tag with subtags, the nested tags will be grouped along a yellow line.
  • It is now possible to use the # symbol to search for all filters, including Content, Function, Format, and Creator.
  • Significantly improved the frame rate when scrolling or zooming in the Arrangement when there are many clips and tracks.
  • VST2 and VST3 plug-ins now use different icons in the browser.
  • Move can now play back Ableton-encrypted samples, both on the device and via Move Manager.
  • The different view modes in the Clip View’s Clip Content Editor now use individual Info View descriptions.

Bugfixes:

  • Fixed an issue where MIDI would sometimes be sent with a high latency after Push has been switched on for a while.
  • When auto-tags are enabled, Drum Rack presets auto-tagged with “Sounds|…” will be excluded from the Drums label.
  • Deleting a Max for Live device now releases any control surface controls the device has previously grabbed.
  • Improved the centering and sizing of the shaper curve visualizations in Saturator.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when instantiating certain plug-ins.
    • Improved software text for some entries in the Edit menu that appear when tracks headers are selected.
  • A newly created Arrangement locator will now be focused after creation.
  • Fixed a bug where all the changes made to warp markers with the keyboard would be undone at once, regardless of which markers were selected.
  • Fixed a rare crash that occurred when a count-in was started.
    • The distance dial for Arpeggiator is now bipolar.
  • The glitch drawing in the rightmost column of the Spectral devices’ spectrogram is improved.
  • The mapping controls in Modulator devices now look correct when disabled.
  • When Oscillator Retrigger is on, Drift no longer clicks at note start.
  • Recently searched tags are now prioritised higher in tag suggestions once again.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when creating a locator after an existing locator whose name is just a space character.
  • Drum Sampler now fades out the end of samples in order to avoid clicks.
  • Live no loner tries to import unsupported file formats to clips and tracks in the Arrangement View.
  • Fixed a bug that caused tab navigation to skip the Arrangement timeline.
  • Automation value display is now hidden when zooming or scrolling in the Arrangement.
  • Fixed a bug which caused the automation value display to appear outside of the Arrangement timeline in certain cases.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur under certain circumstances when setting the looping and warping API properties from the same event.

I am session view “agnostic.” I can see the lure of it, especially if you are using a controller like Push, which is what I am trying to figure out. It obviously makes the most sense when playing live, which I assume is why it has that name. I can also see a purely linear (horizontal) arrangement view being rigid in its own way. I got stuck in Logic by having very long passages with few changes which is great for droning, or slow moving orchestral stuff, but I felt restrained. I am hoping a session approach, in Live, Logic or Bitwig (I have all three) will be a nice addition to what I am used to (arrangement view in Logic). So far, Logic and Bitwig still seem to have better implementations of using both together, but I will need to learn more about Live before I can really say that with any validity.

For me it’s more sketching tool. I can put bunch of ideas to the set and try to combine them together.
I like Maschine approach more, it’s “select one clip per track for a scene” instead of Ableton’s “put all clips to a single row”, but Live is more reliable than Maschine, so I get used to manage a lot of copies of the same clip in different scenes.

Arrangement view works like that in regard to clips.

But in Session view the options are either copy to each line, copy and insert scene or remove the stop button when launching a scene.

I have to say I’m surprised there is so much hate for Session view.

I use Session view for sketching, jamming via the Push, playing live (clip follow actions are very powerful) etc. But when it comes to finishing off a track, I just drag each scene over to the arrangement view to flesh it out further with automation and finishing touches.

I appreciate both views for what they offer.

Yeah, I’m surprised too.

I use session view exclusively, kind of like a tracker (also a huge fan of Renoise). I use scene follow actions to compose the entire track, then finally arm and “print” to arrangement view. If I need to re-do or make changes, I just Cmd + A and delete everything in arrangement and re-print.

During the initial stages of composition, I use arrangement view like a glorified audio editor, to create clips for session view, but that’s pretty much it.

There’s literally only two of us in the Anti Session View League, and already the centrists have begun complaining in defence of session view and crying about the «so much hate against session view» Unbelievable!!! :joy: #forumworldmirrorsrealworld #politicsareinescapable #heiallesammenværsåsnilloglaossværeiferdfyfaenihelvete :joy:

This is one of the most powerful shortcuts in the daw, and a lot of people don’t know about it.

Ableton Note comes with a free Live Lite license. Maybe you or your brother already got that.

Does anyone know how to clear the buffer of the Capture function?

In Note you can do that with the X, and it also shows you the notes inside the buffer, making it much more intuitive. Would love to see something similar in Live and with Push…

If you start/stop transport it will clear the buffer. Not sure if there is a better way.

Shift + Capture button = clear Capture.

Edit: sorry, thought this was the Move thread!

This works for Move, but not for Push? Hope
They will add that soon to Push, as that seems like a workable solution. Although I would prefer if they will add a Note-like solution (show the notes on the screen and give one of the buttons below/above the screen a “clear capture” function when notes are added).

Also, adding automation and notes (overdub) using capture doesn’t seem to work? If I’m correct, it does work with Move?

Not sure how old this news is, but there’s finally a .pdf manual available on the Ableton website :slightly_smiling_face:

You can view both if you have multiple displays, it’s a menu option but it opens a separate window. You also can drag from session to arrangement by starting to drag the clips, then press tab to switch view and drop them
