Ableton Live 12

Is it true that there is no way to midi map the variations launch buttons? :frowning: I am trying it now, but somehow i can not map those…

There is a max for live device, sharpshooter, check it out

It’s more SnapShooter and since I had difficulties to find the link, here it is

Smooth Automator is another nice option, also morphs between variations.

Have to say, I was pretty relaxed about bounce in place because of how easy it’s always been to resample, but now that I have it I don’t know how I lived without it.

Please forgive the cross-thread post - trying to get some visibility on this from any Ableton experts here. This is what I’m interested in:

Bi-Directional Feedback on Project Load

Anyone know how to get Ableton to send MIDI from plugins automatically when loading a project?

Specifically - I’m using TouchOSC on an Ipad to control Microtonic (on Ableton Suite 12.2).

When I load a new drum patch, Microtonic sends the CC’s to my Ipad, and my TouchOSC layout gets updated, this works fine.

However, when I load my Ableton project:

I’d like Microtonic to send all CC’s to update my layout.

Otherwise the TouchOSC controls are not in sync in with Microtonic’s controls (unless I move a control after loading).

Any help appreciated, cheers!

Does anyone know if there is a way to display more information inside the effects racks? I have always used personal racks on my tracks and I’m trying to integrate them in the best way with push, but there are some parameters, such as the lfo waveforms or the various delay timings, that inside these racks are displayed with generic values from 0 to 127, is there any way to display all the correct values?

Also looking at similar issues right now with a view towards polishing my live jamming setup especially for Push standalone. At the moment it seems like it’ll need getting my hands dirty with Max to create custom control panels per channel and for the set overall, afaik all of the off the shelf ones don’t display parameter names and/or values properly.

Another related question, don’t suppose anyone has any tips for preset saving/recall devices? I had been using the Performance Pack variations device for this but it’s not really designed for that and assumes you want to save everything in a rack, which makes it a PITA when you just want to do one device.

I especially want to save the full state of e.g. fairly complex sequencers but nothing else. It seems like the Kilihu one is an audio effect only so seems like it might not be ideal, probably going to try Soundmanufacture X-Presets instead - it does have a midi effect plugin but the documentation isn’t 100% clear that it captures midi max devices is the only thing. They do specify that it works with audio max devices so I think it’s probably safe enough to roll the dice.

Edit: can confirm that the X-Presets device does in fact work with Max sequencers and midi effects. It’s a little bit ugly and maybe not the most elegant, but it gets the job done.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a control room output in Live? A way to seperate the actual master track with the processing we want to render from the output we use to listen to the track so we can put corrective EQ and plugins like Sonarworks there without having to turn them off before rendering.

Until Live 11, Sonarworks used to display a popup message when trying to render with it active. No idea why it doesn’t display the popup in Live 12, but even if it would, a control room out would still be great.

If anyone of you also would like to see that in Live, maybe you can put in a feature request?

Ask this on Ableton’s discord. There’s few devs there (+ knowledgeable users, of course):

AFAIK - no.

But I hope some day we’ll be able to use the new browser icons - but animated! - instead of generic Rack rotaries. Similar to what they offer for some of the devices on Push. I ā€œhateā€ the enigmatic and anonymous Racks with endless rows of same-looking rotaries :frowning:

I use TouchOSC for this, on a few older Ipads.

It’s perfect because you have all your controls in one place, plus you can have the labels display anything you like, values, text, different colours.

You can even make stuff disappear or grey-out in relation to pressing certain buttons etc.

A ton of power and possibilities. One cable from computer to Ipad.

The only ā€˜hard’ bit is you have put the work in at the start to build your layouts.

It’s absolutely worth it though!

Yes I know touch osc, it also runs on android and I tried it on a big galaxy tab… and in the end I decided to buy Push  Touch is very nice but it requires a lot of work, maybe I’ll try it again now that I have an even bigger tablet, it might be worth it to collect a lot of parameters :slightly_smiling_face:

@DanHell @Laser @antic604 Please vote on this suggestion in centercode to improve the UI of the Racks to fix this issue and on Push Ableton Sign up

Probably I’d be going even further than that. I don’t really get why we’re hard limited to 16 macros, why we can’t do enumerated lists or toggles, and why there isn’t better control over parameter ranges / curves. It’s always struck me as strange how basic Live’s native mapping / control scheme tools are, compared to e.g. Bitwig - especially seeing as they have Push as a centrepiece.

I’m at a point where I’m pretty happy with the functionality I’ve got in my main live/jamming set for Push, but it’s pretty complex to operate if I have to go into individual racks or devices, even just at the level of macros - there’s a lot of racks within racks.

So I feel like I need a custom control UI. The good news is that the Performance pack has a device that covers stuff like more complex behaviour than just linear 0-100 when you turn a macro. With the major downsides that it not only doesn’t display the parameter value but also by default doesn’t show the parameter name, so it’s really more suitable for mapping to a knobs and faders midi controller than Push.

But the other good news is that it’s pretty easy to build a device mapped to parameters across your track/set which give you fairly extensive customisation of the controls and how they appear on Push. Tbh it’s not much more involved than doing e.g. OSC mapping or even a detailed Bitwig remote, but doing it the easy way also means that it’s based on absolute parameters and changes to your set will potentially break the mapping, so not ideal for a lot of scenarios.

Anyway, yeah - hard to understand why Ableton haven’t addressed this area given that Push has been around for a long time now, seems at odds with how it’s set up to work. Although I do feel like for situations like the one I’m talking about probably building a bespoke device is still going to be a better option even if/when there is movement - I guess it depends on what level of customisation you’re going for.

Has anybody with Push 2 on Live 12.2 tried if this features works for them as well? I only have P2, and it would be great to get this classic MPC function for melodies and variations within a drum rack.
