I’m using a Mac Book Pro Apple M1 Max 64 GB, Mac OS Sonoma 14.7.5 and I record and mix via an Apollo x8p and a SSL Big Six along with some synthesizers and one Elektron device so far, the Analog Rytm MK2.
I just realized these days that it is really possible to run Overbridge with no latency at all no matter what sample buffer size you set equal in your DAW and the Overbridge Control Panel StandAlone Application. So no matter if I use a plugin buffer size of 64 or 512 samples, my Overbridge mutlitrack recordings are on Grid.
When using Overbridge with Ableton, you must not activate the USB MIDI Input and Output in the Preferences menu. To disable, select Options in the menu bar, then click Preferences. Select the MIDI Sync tab and disable all outbound and incoming MIDI messages to and from the Overbridge device.
If I have the option “Reduced Latency While Monitoring” enabled, nothing will be on Grid since you will not find any instructions in the manual to enable this option. The only option you need to enable is “Delay Compensation”.
Syncing is done in the Overbridge Plugin of your Elektron device, where you tell the plugin to which clock it should sync to.
I think it still introduces latency, even if everything is on the grid. it should actually do that.
if i remember correctly. if you hover over the status bar of the overbridge plugin the latency of the plugin itself is written on the bottom left.
Bit of a misnomer to call that “no latency” - its just latency compensated automatically. Monitoring via the DAW will still sound awfully laggy compared to just monitoring from the main outs
So then should I change the topic to “Ableton Live 12.1.11, AR via Overbridge with Latency Compensated automatically by the plugin”?
It still sounds fine for me and I just learned that most people having problems with being on grid when trying to use Overbridge is that they still have the USB Midi Inputs and Output active in their Midi Settings for the corresponding Elektron device and then they are still trying to adjust the latency of the reported latency but noting is going to be on grid.
I dont ahve a problem with OB2 not being on grid. I do have a big problem with it introducing so much latency to the audio that I can no longer realtime perform through it, stuff such as realtime playing becomes very difficult. The way I always need to use it is to mute all monitoring from the DAW and monitor everything from the devices as if I’m not even using OB2
And when you use an external clock via MIDI cable and tell Overbridge it shouldn’t sync? Works fine here with the Nome II (Midronome) via U-Sync (my AR MK2 gets clock from Midronome and the midi input and output in Live for the elektron device still remain deactived, I only tell Overbridge in the Sync Option “No Sync”.)
