A4 and Ableton recording issues

I cant seem to get ableton to record my analog 4.

Ive got both outputs of A4 going into my focusrite 2i2. The outs of that going to my mixer then to speakers.

My a4 is connected via usb to my mac and my focusrite is also connected via usb to mac.

External instrument setup. Have audio in/out through focusrite. Ableton also recognizes A4. Just wont record.

just to add i have the track rec enabled and it appears to be looking for a recording to occur. Also i can record fine using between ableton push and ableton live.

ok i think i figured it out. apparently i have to set it up as an “audio track” and not an external instrument.

i believe external instrument is when you want to sequence your external gear from ableton push.

I use external instrument and can record no problem. Using external instrument also means you don’t have to manually set the track delay to account for latency.

To record, set up an audio track and set the input as the instrument track your A4 is on, then record it to that that track.

did you arm the tracks?

are the audio ins enabled in the pref page?

there can be a bit a prep work to getting audio devices up with ableton. also sadly ableton only allows one audio device at a time.

I was inserting an “external instrument” tab into ableton and i couldn’t get it working then i inserted an “audio” tab and now it works.

when you say you use external instrument do you mean you use the external instrument because when i do that and arm my track nothing seems to work.

Yes i armed the tracks and set the audio in preferences page.

Like i said i can record in ableton live 9 if i insert an audio track but not if i insert an external instrument track.

my ableton lists the device and its track under the “ext. in”

external instrument I used to trigger my external midi keyboard which send midi out to my synthesizer …

in order to just hear audio in ableton, which comes from the A4, in my opinion it wouldnt do anything at all… since the audio from the a4 box must travel, not the midi notes that ableton receives … jeee, i am confusing myself

The midi is on the instrument track, which due to the external instrument plugin also receives audio, but you can’t record audio to that track, which is why you need to set up an audio track which receives audio from the instrument track which can be recorded.

thank you that’s clears everything up!
