A mixer for my Elektrons?

I’ve got an A4 and and AR that I run into my Octatrack. It’s a lot of fun performing with them at home, but I’m a bit worried about jumping between machines whilst performing live. Also, with the OT’s 4 inputs I feel like I’m not able to utilise the individual outs of the other 2 machines. I’d still use the performance modes on both other machines, but just being able to mute or adjust individual tracks for both machines in one spot would take a load of “messing up live” stress off!

My idea is to have a small mixer where I can send the 4 A4 outs, the AR kick and maybe one or 2 other outs that I’d use for samples, the high end, whatever. Then send the output of that mixer to the OT for mangling. If it has built in effects or aux sends so I can free up neighbour machines, that would be even better.

I’m looking for something small though, like Bluebox small or something a little bit bigger.

Please feel free to tell me if I’m going about this completely the wrong way or if there’s something I’ve missed.

The ideal mixer for Elektrons does not exist yet, unfortunately.

  • The Mackie 802 VLZ4 is a compact and reliable workhorse, although it has no FX and no parametric EQs.
  • A&H DB:4 has great features and specs, but it’s pricey and in my case, it was unreliable.
  • Bluebox is great with a MIDI controller, but all minijack and no balanced outs, if you need that.

Depending on the situation I use the 802 or a Bluebox, or no mixer at all. (using Rytm or Syntakt as the last stage)

Let me know if you find something cool!

The Teenage Engineering TX-6? :joy:

What about passive mixers?

It would be on my list if it were double the size…

Radial Key Largo. Despite the cheesy name absolutely rock solid soundwise. I’d run all the main outs into the KL, run the sub outs into the OT and/or external delay/reverb for further processing, plus have a further stereo fx send and return on the mixer… and another stereo digital track for an iPad or whatever.

I’ve been thinking about getting a pokketmixer just for transition duties, but I haven’t tried that yet.

Nice and compact, but no EQs.

You could get all the individual outs of the AR and have the Stereo Outs of the A4 & OT covered with the TE TX-6. Plus tons of room on your desk and loads of room in your wallet.
It will work for some people!

You do that in the synthesis

That looks quite interesting actually. Hadn’t heard of it before. Does the USB connection mean it takes audio from the iPad??

Yes, with a camera connection kit. It sounds amazingly good.

I was thinking “who the hell would pay £1000 for that?” When it came out but now :eyes:

Awesome, thank you! Will definitely look into that a bit more. I don’t know if I’d miss the EQing since I’ve never played on a mixer before, but it seems to do what I want for the most part!

Can you use the iPad as a send fx by any chance? Bit of a stretch I know but it’d be cool if there was a way to use the iPad as an effects rack for the others.

Mackie vlz

Well, not per se I don’t believe, but you can use the true-stereo audio send on the mixer to do to a small iPad audio interface and proccess in AUM or whatever, and come back into the mixer via USB (which would give you the audio returns as an extra input pair…)
That should work but never took it that far when I had the KL.

Also following out of interest - not intending to derail and hopefully helps OP.

Just looking at the KL now and seems like potential great fit! Can’t believe there’s even MIDI on it!

Are the sub outs you’re referring to the monitor outs and so one could use the monitor level to dictate what is being sent to OT inputs in your suggested setup? Or OT as the effect send? And (brain is in a tangle, think I’m following the line!) OT main outs would need to not go to KL so as not to create a sort of resampling feedback loop? Can start another thread or DM if this is considered a derail!

My idea (and obviously there are lots of other ways) would be sending sounds out the sub outs of the A4 and AR for further proccessing, keeping the main outs of all three Elektron to be mixed in the KL. The whole iPad fx was a tangent, but you could use the mixer’s send/return/monitor outs in all sorts of combinations.

Appreciate all the insight/experience!
Pretty cool how fully-featured utility devices like this can really open things up.

That was quick - just a few posts and Tyrell corporations TX-6 is suggested
