a midi keyboard is connected to the digitakt midi in port and the digitakt is connected via midi thru to the a4 midi in.
what happens now is:
when the keyboard is set to channels 1-3 it plays a4 channels 1-3.
when its set to channel 4 it plays simultaneously both channels 4 on the digitakt and channel 4 on the a 4.
when its set to channel 5-7 it plays samples 5-7 on the digitakt.
when its set to channel 8 it plays samples 8 AND 1 on the digitakt.
i have no idea whats going on.
i want to be able to play the a4 with the keyboard and i want the digitakt to master the a4.
i dont need the keyboard to control the takt.
any ideas?
Connect:
- keyboard MIDI Out to DT MIDI In
- DT MIDI Out to AF MIDI In
On the AF:
In the GLOBAL > MIDI CONFIG > CHANNELS menu, make a note of the AUTO CHANNEL number.
On the DT:
Set the MIDI channel number (CHAN) on one of its MIDI tracks to match the AF’s AUTO CHANNEL number. (This track will send messages to the AF.)
In the DT’s SETTINGS > MIDI CONFIG > CHANNELS menu, make a note of the AUTO CHANNEL number.
On the keyboard:
- set its MIDI channel to match the DT’s AUTO CHANNEL number.
On the DT, select the MIDI track that you set to control the AF as above.
Now, when you play the keyboard, it will send note messages to whichever is the active track on the AF.

im raising the bar a bit -
im trying to use the same setup as above, now adding a blofeld thats being sequenced through the digitakt.
so im routing midi keyboard out to digitakt in.
digitakt out to a midi solutions quadra thru box in.
thru box out1 to the a4 and out2 to the blofeld.
how do i set up midi channels, considering the thru box and the 4 a4 channels?
You don’t need a MIDI Thru box for this set-up; you can simply connect the MIDI Thru of the Analog Four to the MIDI In of the Blofeld.
Leave the Analog Four’s MIDI channel assignments as they are.
Use different MIDI channel numbers on the Blofeld.

and if i’d want to control a few more synths simultaneously with the thru box - (trying to understand if the thru box changes the way you assign midi channel numbers and how many synths i can control with this set up)

and for that matter, does the digitakt’s midi thru acts exactly like the a4’s midi thru?
… then that’s where the Thru box becomes useful.
The Thru box only provides you with more physical MIDI connections. It doesn’t make any difference for MIDI channel numbers: there are still only 16 channels from any MIDI Out port, and the Digitakt only has 8 MIDI tracks from which to sequence.
If you’re going to use the Thru box, I recommend that you put it immediately after the sequencer and connect all the other synths to it.
A MIDI Thru port on any instrument simply passes on what arrives at the MIDI In port of that instrument.
