Given that most of us are just trying to have fun, the measure of my DAWLESS jams is how much fun did I have doing it. As a bonus I can also perform it live (like a musician) rather than sitting at a computer…is there anything less fun or sexy than making music with a mouse and software!

Do Sabbath count as DAWless jams?

On another note.
I find telephone hold music disgusting, miserable and offensive. I miss the beeps.

Rude.

They’re not that bad.

same kind of bashing (maybe too hard word, but I don’t know any better term) in the other direction. They also just wanna have some fun.
I enjoy making music with mouse and software. I also enjoy jamming with my boxes.
I don’t feel sexy in either situation

…meanwhile, if u learn the most basic rules in music and production…

proper trimming / gainstaging of in’s and out’s, overall balancing of level relations, how much of an instrument the eq is, how much of an instrument a comprssor is, commonground of basic dynamic and frequency behaviours, the secrets of mono versus stereo and the miracle of mid/side processing, that a room is always half the sound of what u actually hear, some knowledge of selfresonancies and frequency partials/overtones, there are “only” six floors in the house of all frequencies we all actially can hear,…

it does not really matter what kind of setup u got in use, nothing needs to sound like a phone call on hold loop, if u know that at least…

and sure, any daw gives u easier access to learn, follow and stick to these basic rules…
while working dawless takes just more effort to really get there…and many get lost along the way…

not to mention the things u just can’t learn upfront…
u got them by nature or ur raising ur awareness within constant experience because u desperatly want to cross that line…

like an overall talent for sonic story telling, having ideas and vision, arranging all that to make it translate and become more than just the sum of it’s details…

Literally never heard hold music that sound like a Dawless Jam.

Don’t beat yourself up mate I’m sure there’s gear out there somewhere that loves you for who you are

I do more ‘synth face’ when jamming on hardware which I am told is very sexy ;-), hard to pull off when sitting down programming in beats with a mouse…maybe I should just try harder!

I won’t trust that person anymore

This reminds me of (but isn’t the same as) this kind of content which always makes me laugh, some variation of ‘what people think producing is like vs what it’s actually like’

It’s(was) Monday morning, it’s not serious, nor an insult, it’s an observation that was triggered by some of my own efforts in the past… I’ve made more than my fair share of bang average bangers in the last 2-3 years.

It may have been a joke but I assume this is still an opinion you’re presenting, unless this is some kind of avant-garde social experiment

It’s going to stir the pot posting in a hardware forum saying that you think most people that jam on hardware are making shite music  Not that you’re not allowed to have that opinion…

But yea sorry if you were just trying to have a laugh and I pissed in the cornflakes, equally not my intention…

I WISH hold music sounded like most of the DAWless jams I’ve heard.

It’s not the music part of DAWless jams that bothers me. Noodling sounds fine for what it is (and is fine). And while watching gear porn isn’t my bag, some people like it. More power to them.

What bothers me is that we even talk about ‘DAWless’ as a thing. It’s just playing an instrument. In the same way that someone picking up a guitar at a party or recording a YouTube acoustic cover is performing music. I don’t understand why it has to have its own special category.

Production is different, though.

The fact is, if you’re not using a DAW to produce music in some capacity, you’re massively shooting yourself in the foot. It’s either incredibly impractical or expensive to fully record, arrange, and master music on hardware alone. Even something like the MPC One (which I’d argue is just a limited computer in a box, and IS a DAW) would benefit from some tweaking on a PC.

I’ve never eaten a Panini and felt like I’ve got my moneys worth.

I’ll agree with you when it comes to mastering tracks, but it really isn’t necessary at all to use a daw to arrange, mix or perform tracks. It’s all about what you’re trying to achieve really.
