2019 Gear Purchase: Hits & Misses

Oooooh, you’re a triple play user! Can you comment on how fast it tracks. I’ve been eyeing it since it was first advertised, but pretty apprehensive about that type of tech (especially since it is wireless)

Any thoughts on what you’ll replace the Mackie with?

Miss:

  • OP-Z: I didnt like the sound engines and it didnt feel right in my hands (unergonomic and flimsy build quality). Had to let it go and I am glad that I could sell it with minimal loss.
  • Circuit Monostation: I liked the sound and the pads but I just couldnt gel with the sequencer. Sold it.
  • Volca Kick: I loved the sound but in the end I just didnt enjoy using it because of the cheap volca knobs. There were also some parameters that had ranges that felt off, dont remember which sadly…
  • Volca Keys: pretty much the same as the Volca Kick…

Mixed feelings:

  • Behringer Neutron: I dont enjoy patching as much as I thought and the tune knobs and tuning in general are problematic. Still it’s so much synth for a small price, I think I will keep it a bit longer.

Hit:

  • I built a new high-end PC with one of those new Ryzen-CPUs with 8-cores and 32 gb of RAM and it is blazing fast.
I can have multiple instances of Serum, Repro and all those great software synths running at the same time with no problem at all and go crazy with all those vst effects, routings and what not. Everything is just a few clicks away and I can always go back to old versions of my project and the convenience of using software feels very good.

I’ve had it for about a week. Installed on an Epiphone Casino Coupe, so by far not the most ideal guitar for it. But I am seriously impressed. For me, it works best with a plectrum and a slight adjustment in playing is needed for total accuracy - being more deliberate with note on and mutes etc. The tracking is not an issue at all, neither is latency. Each string is tracked separately and all of them can either be sent out over one midi channel or six different ones (for each string). Seriously, I can’t recommend it enough. My favourite trick so far is to have my guitar blended into the signal via DN in, then have the DN doing some crazy fast arp stuff on top, and eventually I will add the Moog Minitaur for pure bass sounds under that. Can’t wait to use it live. Once I have a few demos set up, I will record some things and start a separate thread for those who are interested. I will stop hijacking other people’s threads now hahaha

What about feedback? I mean, do the leds show the position of each parameter if you change parts? I guess it´s not possible.

How are you using it?

Well my use of it was to move parameters OFF the OT, so I would change those only on the Twister, not the OT.
So, for my uses feedback is not important.

There is a whole thread about it.

Great thanks!

Hit: Octa mk2 :black_heart:
Not sure: Lifeforms SV-1
Miss: iVCS3 for IPad

I ordered a DN keys the night I brought home my DN box (keys wasn’t available locally); loving having the 4 stereo TRS outputs/individual tracks > ADAT > Audio Interface > iPad > AUM so I have unique FX chains on all 4 DN tracks, and resampling through FX setup for my Digitakt channel. The DN Keys has made me really wish the Digitakt had 8 outputs, and makes its inability to stream/overbridge any audio streams in any way with iOS terribly painful.

That sounds awesome. I really would like to install one on my guitar, but I have a feeling it may not fit. I have a Hohner G3T which is like a wooden neck-thru Steinberger clone, so there is hardly any space to fit it on there.

Hmm, I just looked up some images of that guitar. You might be fresh out of luck there due to the bridge and bridge pickup not accommodating the top bit of the pickup (see image of mine below). Buuuut, you could buy a piece of shit clone strat on the 2nd market for almost no money. If you really like it, upgrade to something more playable later on down the line.

I just turned 40 last month :expressionless:
But I still feel 21
My mom says it’s because I’m immature, but I call it YOUTHFUL

I’ve been thinking about getting the Chase Bliss Mood, it seems like a really fun pedal!

Hits:

  • Basimilus Iteritas Alter by Noise Engineering. It’s really a beast, in a way it reminds me of working with the A4, one needs to be careful with knob turns to find the sweet spots, but there are many.

  • Mutable Instruments Plaits. Very, very deep, clearly a desert island sort of module. Or one that should be considered as a serious option for very small racks.

  • OT MK2. Bought it last year but it remains the centre of everything this year as well. Absolutely fantastic !

Miss:

  • Black Wavetable VCO by Erica Synths. Not a bad one, in fact it’s a pretty neat wavetable module but I need things that I can drive to nasty/noise territory easily, and this one aims at being mellow and sweet mostly. I’d probably keep it if I had a bigger rack so I won’t sell it but I can’t justify it right now in my rack.

well, dont know if all of these are from 2019, but they come into my mind:

Hits:
fostex th909 - with this headphone i hear details i didnt know before
bitwig 3 - the grid is really cool
makenoise mimeophon - very creative delay

misses:
1010 bitbox - where are the updates?
te opz - Im getting a bit tired of the synth engines
behringer model d - impulse buy, but lost interest very quick

undecided:
moog matriarch - can sound great, but also has some flaws, still too early for a verdict
vcv rack - very curious what will happen 2020

I just preordered Rabid Elephant’s Natural Gate to start my modular journey. Right now I only have a Novation Summit which I love. Preordered the Expressive Osmose and had to return a Moog Matriarch due to a VCA issue and have to wait an entire whole year for that sweet, sweet Black Friday deal again…

Not a whole lot in terms of hits or misses this year since the Summit the same engine as the Peak I sold for it but it’s an amazing synth. I much prefer it over when I tried out the Rev 2, the only polys that beat it in sound are the amazing OB-6 and Moog One, perhaps the UDO Super 6 upon release. Regardless the Summit is surely a winner.

I’m still looking for my ultimate groovebox to get me away from the PC. The MPC X is the front runner but with NAMM around the corner, I’m always weary of making new high-end purchases…

Hits for me: Five12 Vector Sequencer, Digitone, Expert Sleepers FH-2, Mimeophon. The Vector is a beast and with the regular firmware updates so far, the possibilities are huge.

No real misses for me but some undecided: Op-1 and Mutable Marbles. Both obviously fantastic and I can see why people love them, but I am just not gelling with either so far.

Pretty much all Hits this year but a lot of things bought in 2018 have drifted into the Miss pile.

Hits…
Digitone + MI Yarns. Absolutely love the implementation of FM with the DN and the 4 tracks of MIDI pair up to the Yarns module beautifully. Bought a Doepfer A-138s stereo mixer module so I could send the modular’s output back through the DN effects. Works a treat.
Fender Pugilist + Strymon Flint. Finally a distortion pedal that I like and the Flint rounds off my guitar pedal board nicely.

Misses…
Novation Peak. The sound wasn’t doing it for me and the menu diving was getting on my nerves. Programmed 1 sound that I really loved on it that I then managed to recreate almost exactly on my Rev2.
MPC Live. At least I finally know that I hate touch screens on instruments.

Undecided…
Digitakt. I wanted a change from my MDUW mk2 but I haven’t had the time to dig into the DT enough to know wether that was the right move. My music’s moving in a more ambient direction so I suspect it’ll fit the bill perfectly.

Miss: Ableton Live Standard and Push 2. …before I realized that I just don’t gel with Ableton (long story for another day). Sold both. Also sold NI gear to force limit/narrow focus for learning.

Good purchase: MacBook Pro (quad core), Logic Pro X and Korg Minilogue XD. Strings for my electric guitar that I’m learning how to play and having a blast).

Completely paired down my studio until I get my workflow in order (which is starting to come together with LPX). Next year will be adding 1 Elektron piece of kit (DT likely). It was an expensive year, but thankfully there’s a few music stores where I live that give decent prices for excellent condition gear.
