12 bit old school sampler

Imo it’s worth the $99, for sure. It really does nice work to drums. You need to want them crunchy and real lofi.

The po-33 is great for its size and price, truly a little gem both in sound and features.

Its sometimes too lofi for my taste though… theres a lot of noise, and it easily distorts. Great, but not for everyone I think.

The sp202 and zoom sampletrak are the best sounding cheap samples imo, they truly add magic to the sound of samples.

Thanks. So the sp 202 has more magic than the 303?

Yeah I agree with that. Owned all 3. The issue is the sampletrek and 202 are tougher to find and are overpriced now. I ended up selling mine and had enough money for an akai s900 plus extra cash.

@Thespa: soundwise yes. The 202 has hardly any fx, no sequencer and no resampling. It can do amazing sound and nothing else. The 303 has great fx, and is a (very slow) stand alone beatmaking machine.

@BassesAndPads that sounds like a great deal. I never had the s950/900 but would love one just for its legacy. How is the workflow?

Very fast. I explained it a few posts above but I can basically sample in, adjust start point, add some filter and then play the pitches on keys while recording a take into my DAW in probably 2 minutes or less per sound.

I don’t program my drums on the s900 so I don’t save the files to the USB I had put in, but this is mainly due to needing more i/o. I definitely could use the 900 as a drum machine if I had more inputs. Then I’d just save kits on there, which would add a little more to the workflow since I’d have to rename and reload the sample each time. But thats still very fast once you do it a few times.

Here’s some more Sampletrak stuff since this thread came back up.

Some hip-hop.

Some kind of ambient stuff.

I did this one by sampling some stuff into my Sampletrak before I put it on my Digitakt. I think that the last track in particular highlights what the Sampletrak can do when you’re pitching a sample around.

Realised reading the thread that funnily enough, despite claiming I dont really like samplers, I have owned and still own quite a few…

Most of what I would recommend has been suggested.

Thought I’d suggest the Harry Axtens (HKA Design) Digitizer pedal as a lofi processing option. It’s 8/6/4 bit rather than 12. But is probably my favourite pedal ever.

This is pretty much my intention. Colour the sample on the sampler then sample in to the DT for track creation.

Highly suggest the sampletrak in that case. Its great for its sound, but its also great for chopping samples and playing them from the DT through midi.

I did this entire beattape that way on the DT+sampletrak:

If you want to get nearby the sp12 tone, consider a Emu Emax 1 Sampler (Rack or Keyboard version), not as cheap as 15 years ago when i was able to get one for a budget, but similar filter like the sp. sounds a bit like a mpc 60 too i think. The Emu Emax 2 is not 12 bit btw!
Although the recommended Eps 16 plus would be my choice nowadays for that 12 bit tone.

The EPS16+ isn’t 12 bit.

The Yamaha TX16W is. It was my very first sampler so I can’t say the 12bit thing made a huge difference in terms of sound.

The Eps is 13 bit, right? But its the special 12 bit tone so to speak that people are afterwards

Yamaha SU10 if you can find one cheap, the lowest 2 grades are nice and crunchy without being too much so.

@darenager how does the Lofi-12 sound doing the old record at high pitch then transpose down trick?

Pretty crunchy!

in that case let me stop you right there

I was looking through some stuff in my phone and I came across this

I made this on my Circuit Rhythm. The Rhythm has an effect called digitise that can emulate lower bit depths and sample rates. But I didn’t use that. I made this by just recording some synth tones and pitching them down by like 2 octaves. Turns out it does a bit of aliasing.

Thanks for the rec, ever do a comparison vs the ottobit jr?
