it doesnât seem to be there in 3.1.2 either Iâm afraid.
I guess this avoids the issue of any latency meaning a small silence on the start of the multisamples?
It is kinda annoying having to plug things directly into the Blackbox to avoid this as much as possible, rather than just routing them there. Hope it can be added.
edit: just actually tested, and it doesnât wait for the sample, it just records once it sends a MIDI note as far as I can see.
BUT⌠it seems to play from the first recorded sound not from the start of the sample.
which is great!
Unless you wanted it for some other reason?
(side note: I LOVE the multisample function, itâs so easy to pack up a patch for live performance!)
I am trying to work out what is the least mental gymnastics way to build a full song on 1010 Blackbox.
Any input? How do you work?
Export the stems to a DAW is the least mental gymnastics for me.
What is stems.
I transfer the samples to my computer or tablet and use a DAW to make a song
Why not start in the DAW to begin with?
lower your expectations to what a song is until you can finish one
build up from there
for blackbox specifically i just add things to pads that sound nice together
then sequence them, then plop those sequences into song mode
to keep things simple i keep all midi sequences in the same spot as the pad its playing
it has to start with an idea, or an inspiration. otherwise i find it almost impossible to make anything
Because my Mac mini and 50 inch monitor donât travel well to the couch or toilet.
Having just tried to make my first beat totally in the Blackbox, am thinking that although I miss some of the extra functioinality of having the Digitaktâs LFOs and stuff itâs just so temptingly portable that I think Iâm going to work out a live set just for Blackbox too.
Which leads me to the question⌠HOW DO YOU LIVE?
just triggering sequences seems pretty powerful, so maybe just thatâŚ
In which case, any recommendations on controllers? I think my mind may fritz out if I try to do it all on the touchscreen.
I guess maybe a MIDI fighter makes sense as itâs the same 4x4 grid⌠hmm.
OK, just thinking out loud a bit but also interested to hear any experiences!
@circuitghost you are totally right about the sequencer, itâs super quick and fun to build stuff.
(side note: I object to the black knobs, but seems you can only get the replacements sent to the US/Canada⌠anyone seen the like about? I assume they might actually be special ordered in those colours⌠ALL I ASK IS MAGENTA BUTTONS!)
Had a BlackBox a few years ago.
Am I right in saying that theyâve added more internal effects now?
The Box can do send&return so you can feed some channels out to FX and return them into the mix.
I used to have a little Eurorack box with a few modules like Clouds in it. Worked pretty well.
Think having external âperformanceâ effects is a must for LIVE-ing.
Also, Faderfox EC4 has lots of control knobs with the benefit of being able to label the knobs so you can see what controls what on each âpageâ of knobs.
Delay and reverb as far as i am aware
The Box can do send&return so you can feed some channels out to FX and return them into the mix.
oh can it? I hadnât worked that out!
That is pretty useful!
Is it just using the ârecord monitorâ as a return?
I just had to google to see the back of one of these things.
You route Audio Out of say Channel 3, through external effects, then bring it back via IN and bring it into the Mix.
I think I may have even used a couple of the 1/2/3 channels for out and used the Phones as my actual Out. - I cant remember, its been a while - I had one of these when they were first released
Pretty sure youâll find into on how to do the FX routing on the Blackbox/1010 Forum.
Googled for some answers, I see some chat about what I was explaining but looks like its a wishlist thing. Im pretty sure Im not imagining that I was able to do this. Haha.
Yea, this works for recorded samples only, not for live signals for obvious reasons. Now that you can control the volume of each output, it even works pretty well for full wet effects settings.
Route your padâs signal to eg Out 2, then to the effects, back to In from there. Now you can record the effected signal onto another pad routed itself to Out 1.
Be careful not (!) to monitor that Out 2 or your ears might fall off. Good idea to keep the compressor on for the same reason.
I canât speak to using the sequencer live but I used the Blackbox as the core of my live set (two actually! I borrowed one from a friend) in a few different configurations:
Techno/club:
- Multiple tracks broken down into stems (drum stem / melodic stem)
- Stems were assigned to multisample pads to get around the 16 pad limitation (i.e. drum stem assigned to C1, melodic stem assigned to C#1)
- External sequencer triggered clips with various combinations of midi notes to trigger combinations of stems (i.e. I could trigger just the drum stem for the next track, which would choke the drum stem for the current track, then trigger both stems for the next track which would choke both current stems)
- Stems werenât quantised because they were loaded in multisample pads
- It was really fiddly, had to be 100% predetermined, required loads of set up, and wasnât any fun at all
Ambient:
- Quantised loops loaded onto all 16 pads which were triggered by hand
- Launch Control XL controlled volume/filter
- FX sends adjusted using Blackbox controls
- Was way more fun, expressive, and hands on than the âclubâ set
I donât know what the take away from this is, but I found it a lot more fun when there was less going on and I had room to improvise and perform. Maybe thereâs a good middle ground where the Blackbox sequencer handles some basic structure? When I was running these sets it was before the 3.0 update when the song mode got punched up, I probably would have used it otherwise.
Edit: I will add that the âclubâ set described above is the end result of a lot of trial and error. I tried using slice pads and chaining stems into long files (organised by BPM) but something to do with the way the BB reads files loaded on slice pads meant it would eventually go out of sync with the internal midi clock, so you couldnât run loops at the same time. I tried loading full songs into pads and DJing. It wasnât fun. All of this, I should mention, to avoid having to load a new set and risk audio dropping out as it buffers.
Edit: This is the only other context not provided for âclubâ set above but in case anyone cares:
- Blackbox outputs 1, 2, 3 assigned to drum stems, melodic stems, quantised loops respectively
- Loops output routed through Pioneer RMX 500 effects unit
- All outputs then routed into channels 1, 2, 3 of DJ mixer, with Model:Samples routed into channel 4
- Squarp Pyramid (worst purchase) sends midi clips triggering multisample pads in various combinations
- 100% on rails and not fun
Alternative version:
- Two Blackboxes routed into Bluebox, one with sections of songs short enough so they can be quantised, the other with vocal and drum loops
- Model:Samples routed into Bluebox
- Launch Control XL mapped to Bluebox faders, mutes, and Blackbox filters
- Launchpad Mini mapped to both Blackbox pads and Model:Samples program change
- More room for improv but still essentially just playing back stems, not fun
yeah looping audio from OUT to IN for an external effect works great
i dont remember how exaclty ive done it but you can use external fx and listen to them live without causing a feedback loop.
this is also great news for @the_duckchild, as something like NTS KAOSS would be super sweet for adding some live expression to the performance
Amazing! so it IS possible. I knew iâd done it in the past and great to know I wasnât just imagining it.
Yes, the new KAOSS pad thatâs coming out will be an awesome pairing with the BlackBox.
Could mount them together like the the 2000xl and FX
it is not a bit clunky deciding what to send to the effect?
I hadnât seen that new Kaoss pad though, even just on the master out that would be super useful!
