Well, basically recording a loop from the current Digitakt pattern, then move to the sample (I’ll probably do this with a DJ mixer crossfader - ie. CH1 for Digitakt or whatever, CH2 for the BB loop). While the transition sample is playing, I load a different pattern on the Digitakt and I start mixing them (again, with the DJ mixer).

If you have a MIDI track or two open on the DT then I think you could use it to easily automate that process. Use DT to trigger record, either use BB set record length or use DT to stop record (same MIDI note message). Let the loop play while you change patterns on DT. DJ DJ DJ.

After transition is over use another note, potentially on another MIDI track on the DT to keep things simple, to clear the loop on BB. Repeat to record another loop.

I tried to test it using Deluge and Blackbox but I’m not updated to the new more stable version of the BB firmware and it wasn’t working consistently.

great! would love to see that in action…
tbh I would probably just hook up my Faderfox UC4 to the USB port of the BB and use that instead, mapping some other parameters as well (filter maybe?)

Another question: if I clear the loop, do the clip settings remain? like the quantize settings for example… or any other settings (filter, etc…?)

Faderfox sounds like a great companion!

I’m not sure about the clip settings after clear. The manual updates just posted above says that settings should remain. I’ve seen some people say that modulations, such as lfo > filter, get removed. Firmware is still in beta. I can check it in a week, feel free to remind me if you still don’t have an answer by then

Loving these new updates. Can’t wait for the official release! My blackbox now is powerful enough that I took my multi fx pedal out of my EDC. Can leave my pedals at home! If we could just get some kind of distortion/overdrive on board the BB I’d be set for life

on 17.x firmware, clear was CLEAR. (I played with 19.x and decided to wait for GA, and now we have it).

IMHO - I think the hardest part of the transition looping is going to be matching levels and tone without anybody noticing. The operation would be a few steps, but it’s nothing you can’t reasonably control from the blackbox itself.

now, unless I missed something in the notes. we don’t have overdub. BUT, if you reserve THREE pads for this, you could get the effect of continuous overdub in your set like this:

  1. dt is main
  2. dt plays project 102
  3. record dt project 102 into bb pad 2
  4. bb is main, playing pad three
  5. cue project 103 on dt
  6. dt is main
  7. record dt 103 on bb pad 3
  8. bb is main (pads 2 & 3 playing)
  9. tweak filters and effects on pads 2 and 3 to taste
  10. resample bb pads 2 & 3 into bb pad 4
  11. cue dt project 112
  12. dt is main
  13. CLEAR bb pads 2&3
  14. record dt112 to bb pad 2
  15. bb is main
  16. tweak filters and fx again on pads 2 and 4
  17. resample bb 2 &4 to pad 3.
  18. and so on…

not even 20 steps… heh…
it will make more sense when you have it in hand.
for this example, I made assumptions about how you’d crossfade - that’s really up to you.

I made this video about layering with the blackbox, which essentially covers “overdubbing” as well

I’m a bit confused about this but don’t worry, thanks for the detailed explanation!
Regarding levels: wouldn’t it sound exactly the same when I crossfade - providing I adjust the gain on that channel to match the DT input?
I haven’t watched the video yet, but I will later. Thanks again!

Looks like 2.0 official firmware is out. Will be updating tonight , didn’t wanna get too deep into the beta firmware and Mess up a track etc

I’ll do a test after I get around to reorganizing my desk and updating my bb firmware.

I do also have a DT, but mostly, I use the bb to loop synths. I feel like they come out quieter - however, take this with a grain of salt because I have the bb in coming from my mixer aux out (so I can sample whatever) and my levels to the aux are often just set poorly. Might not apply to your setup.

Anyone have any backstory on Aaron (Higgins? I think) of 1010?

I find it very interesting to see such great devices being (a) initially released (b) have a culture of really cool customer service and continuing development.

As I dabble with a soldering iron and components from time to time to create ugly circuits it boggles my mind how the likes of blackbox, M8, OP-1 ‘came out of nowhere’ … but clearly a lot of work and experience went into them.

Huh. Is is kind of weird? That they started a whole new version (2.0) just to fix the bugs of the last version (1.9) which I think was still in beta?

Or is that just how 1010 rolls; a feature release followed by a bugfix release?

From what I’ve seen yes 1.9 was always 2.0 RC, once they’d ironed out the kinks.

I agree that all of the 1.9 iterations, most importantly the GUI change to match the BlueBox, were heading to the official 2.0 label.

What is weird, but in a good way that has made me happy as an early adopter of the BlackBox, is that every single customer is invited to be a beta tester. There is always the last official, stable version available, and all new beta versions of the firmware can be loaded and explored at your leisure.

Many have complained that they don’t want to risk their projects by loading up a beta firmware, but this is easily countered by buying a spare $9 32gb microSd card to load new firmware onto for experimentation.

New EP coming along. Mixing and mastering now. In the kitchen. I even got a plant in frame.

A delicate equilibrium, it appears…

Your Digitakt seems to have mastered levitation.

Haha, well yes. Actually, I only use the Digitakt for monitoring, I don’t have the right cables to route it otherwise  kind of embarrassing, but it works. It’s not even my Digitakt.

And now, I’m actually done. Could be that I’m just releasing this now and moving on, put it behind me.

That’s great! I‘ve been „finishing“ an EP for several weeks now, but it’s not the Blackbox‘ fault that I‘m still not done.

Well, I can tell from your production values, the time you put into your work pays off. That’s the kind of patience that shows.
