That is my problem too: anything I work on ends up in Live. It is just how music gets made for me (even if it’s just dumping stems). If the BB had sequence export/track export I would probably have bought one to at least try.
If you use an iPad and like the idea of the BlackBox you owe it to yourself to try Drambo if you have not already.
Had Blackbox and used it as a glorified recorder and sometimes as a ‘clean’ sp404 without fx.
Now I pretty much have a cheap alternative to a Blackbox and a Bluebox combined with Koala sampler on the ipad and a Zoom H6.
Dont miss multi sampling and playback of long samples as I wasnt really using those features.
Bonus, it even records into DAW easy for better post processing and I dont have to deal with their ugly UI on a tiny screen.
This is the reason I got the Blackbox. I have a Pyramid and all the synths I need, but was spending a lot of time away from home working. All I had to do was sample my gear into Blackbox and then I could take my studio anywhere. Go home, plug in the midi and listen to it on the real gear.
Maybe in that respect it’ll help you bring it together too. There’s no wasting time twiddling synths. You focus mostly on making making tracks.
Yeah that’s a bummer, but say you had a song arranged could you then go back and track it out through a combo of muting and assigning to different outputs?
A little scared to if I’m honest, but it is on the list to explore at some point. Trying not to buy too many apps too close together. Also specific to this conversation I think I read it doesn’t yet support multiple ins and outs… if so that gets in the way of resampling through external hardware effects.
Looks like a fun app and cheap, will have to give it a try.
Yeah, that does sound like a nice way of working. And for a portable solution using your own sounds I’m guessing feels more productive than using softsynths as stand-ins for your actual gear.
With the multisampling, is it only automatic, or can you manually assign different samples to different notes under the same pad?
I hear you. For me it is the best sampling app on the iPad, but it needs a few more things to be perfect.
But do not be scared of it: if I can figure it out, I promise you can too. It is very easy to set up an instrument to sample external audio. Maybe I will make a very short video to convince you.
Yeah, that is one of the things that has been stopping me from pulling the trigger on one of these as well. I figured Ableton export would come standard, as it is on the Bitbox. Although, on the Bitbox, I don’t think there is sequencer data stored, because I don’t think it has one built in. Anyway, for me the Blackbox would be a great portable machine with a direct path to finishing off tracks if it had this feature to export into an Ableton file with your samples, sequences, etc. Even just stems export would be stellar.
Yeah, I’d be delighted with an export of stems based on sequencer/song programming. The thing has a high capacity storage card in it, as high as you want. There’s no reason why they can’t add it. I’s like song mode on the Digitakt. Despite the obvious need for it, the prayers on their user forum haven’t been answered.
Yeah, I don’t get it. And I agree with you, that with high capacity SD storage, It seems like a no-brainer. I have been looking for portable sampler, either internal battery, or usb brick powered device, and this one keeps coming up, but not quite there for me. The Tracker does stem export, and the sequencer has some advanced functions, so maybe I will look there instead. Obviously two different machines, each has its own pros and cons for what I am looking for. The Tracker is interesting, and they have been releasing firmware updates quite a bit, but there also seems to be a bit of bugs still. I’m just trying to get my cake, and then eat my cake, and then bake another cake with the first cake…anyway.
Also, my expectations for stem export on the Blackbox dissipated quite a bit when the Bluebox was released. Seems like they built these two to be made for each other. One to sample and get creative, and the other to capture the end game. Don’t pass go, don’t collect music.
Perhaps they want people to buy both boxes, but many of us already own a mixer, a multi-input interface, and a DAW. I’ll never buy a BlueBox. And no reason to degrade quality trying to get music off the BlackBox from another round trip through the converters.
Yeah, I feel like that was the plan, especially, when you look at the ins and outs for each box. And of course, they each have their own standalone usefulness and purposes. But together, they have built them to be the Laverne and Shirley of audio devices.
Wow. Didn’t know Ableton export was available on Bitbox. Not being available for BlackBox makes it that much more off-putting.
Anyone on version 1.7 ?
I keep getting blank fields on the screen. Anyone have this and find a solution. Only way to get back to normal is reload 1.5
I’m on 1.7.4. What’s cooking?
Tried updating again and keep getting blank fields in different screens/ files.
Okay. I’ve not had that issue. I’ve been on 1.7.4 for some time now.
Reach out on the 1010 forum directly, if you haven’t already, and tag Aaron and Steve, they’re quick to reply and really helpful.
EDIT: I did have that issue before, but that was due to the SD card. You on the one that came with the unit? It’s not a great one, if you are.
I contacted them the first time this happened. The advice was to use a new card and reload one file at a time instead of a bulk load. PITA considering the quantity, but probably my only option now
@HoldMyBeer There are some bugs on the stem export function with the tracker (tempo drifting). It’s getting better and better with firmware updates though
Maybe they will get the bugs sorted out for its upcoming one year anniversary.
Looks like it was released in 2019?
