How could I miss that? I could swear this wasn’t there before . Thanks!

Happy Monday everyone. Have a great week:

Hello Bento + Effects:

How do the pads feel? Got a bit of squish to them? Responsive and playable?
It’s been really hard to not buy one I have to say. Appreciating any content on it I can find. Birthday coming up, might have to treat myself then  it looks too delicious

They remind me a little bit of the Novation LaunchPad, new Circuit and Keys Pads. They feel good and are very playable imho.

Give yourself until the firmware drop at the end of June. There should be a lot in there to help make the decision a no brainer.

A long one of discovery:

I’m addition to what @echo_opera wrote: I like them, they are fun. Playing notes with them doesn’t always feel ideal. Iā€˜m triggering a note twice from time to time when I just want to hold it. It also started to happen to me with beats once I played it while standing. I don’t know why exactly that happens but it’s a bit annoying.

Another thing that’s a bit weird is that velocity isn’t mapped to anything by default. Depending on your workflow, that might be a pro or con. With the default settings, velocity values are also quite low when I finger drum. Notes are always registered (unlike on AR, where you have to hit it really hard sometimes), but I often have values of 20-30 velocity even though my partner is already annoyed at how loud Iā€˜m tapping .

Yeah, I’ve got the double triggering issue, but mines pretty constant on a number of pads, 1010music have acknowledged this as it’s occurring for a number of folk on the forum they think they have a solution, so this might just be a firmware fix? I’ll wait till the next update to see if this sorts it before I request a replacement from the retailer.

But other than that, the Bento is cool, looking forward to where they take this and is pretty much the mobile groovebox to beat at the moment, hope they add a synth engine like the fireball to it but I’m happy with the polyphonic sampler, which I was missing from the Digitakt 2, although both would make a great pairing.

Ah, good to know this is a thing! It’s not a dealbreaker for me, but theyā€˜ll hopefully fix it. One of the many things that would keep me from taking this thing on stage.

Birthday is end of June so good timing hehe. In my wee studio it’ll be joining my Digi2akt, Digi2one and Quad cortex (guitar and vocals), planning to run everything through it.
I’ve been really enjoying using song mode on the digis recently so that I can keep my hands to playing guitar and Digitone parts live. Hoping that the pattern change messages can be picked up by the Bento when song mode eventually arrives on that or vise versa.
It’ll add multisamples, granular, nicer pads to play melodies whilst also being a mixer with all the ins and outs I need. I could honestly see it replacing my Digitakt but I love it so much and super tuned in to the elektron workflow. We’ll see.
I travel in my van a fair bit and love capturing field recordings, one shots and putting together a jam of my adventure in the evenings. It’ll be perfect for that. It’s ticking so many boxes and I trust 1010 to keep improving it along the way.
Super hyped about it.

Man, this thing is such a mixed bag of emotions.

A few hours ago, I was very impressed discovering that I can customize the pad behavior in loops mode to such a fantastic degree that I see the potential for a whole new workflow.

Then I load in a few samples instead of recordings and nothing works, the pads don’t toggle and if they do the sound just never stops and loops restart themselves. There’s also a recording that’s just stuck on a pad, can’t unload and blocks a whole slot. Also: if you mute tracks that send to reverb or delay, you still hear the effects sends of those tracks. Oh and now it just all of a sudden played back an ear piercingly loud feedback out of nowhere that could have destroyed my or a whole club full of people’s ears in certain situations. The left channel was broken afterwards and I had to restart.

I still have a lot of fun with Bento, but you can’t shake the feeling that you’re a big tester as seen as you start to use it in more than the most basic ways. Iā€˜m happy I have it right now, but Iā€˜m also wondering whether they should have just tested and refined it for another 6 months.

@echo_opera Are you intentionally avoiding your videos to show up in search results by not putting 1010 into title / description?

No. But thanks for the reminder and updated :facepunch::level_slider::heartpulse:

Is there no EQ?

But but, I can do the same thing on my blackbox

With each of the 16 loops within the looper track being able to have custom lengths - when you are setting them to ā€œcustomā€, can you set those in terms of a specific number of steps?

Or does ā€œcustomā€ just mean, the loop will stop and loop whenever you hit the record button to stop it?

Think you just managed to sell me on getting a Bento.

I think it’s more like this. There’s settings for quantization and length that are based on steps and bars, but the custom mode means what you’re describing I think. At least that’s how I used it, just set a threshold for audio and then hit pause when I wanted to stop the loop recording. It was easy to get a number of bars and a nice working loop for a number of bars that isn’t selectable (there are few options for longer bars that aren’t reeeeeally long like 128 bars).

Was just thinking, would be pretty easy to get some cool polyrhythms going if you could just select a loop to be like, say 9 steps or 15 steps or whatever.

Anyways looks cool!

Pretty sure you’d need to do that manually and hope for the best. With the options available, it’s hard to get exact loops with odd step lengths. BUT, you can always load up any sample into loop slots, so if you prepare them elsewhere, what you describe is totally doable. There’s also lots of settings for how the pads behave in looper mode (toggle, gate, trigger) with options like quantization of when action happens after you hit the pad.
