Definitely interested to watch the development of this after release. I have my Blackbox which is really the utility knife in my live setup.
I would really like a better method of managing multi-samples on-device (the Blackbox has none) - that’s my main gripe, but ConvertbyMoss does the conversion trick most of the time so it’s not a huge problem these days.
so much cope in this thread. you dont have to buy it. id rather have access to an instrument as soon as possible and then get the cool new updates later than wait until its “finished”. constantly in progress sounds like a positive to me rather than something to complain about
the black box didnt have to be anything beyond what it was when it came out, but they continued to make it a whole new machine (for free) by the time 3.0 was released
this thing is a dream piece of hardware and as far as i know, theres nothing really like it. up until like maybe 2 years ago or less, people had been constantly trying to decide between an akai force and a maschine or an octatrack and an sp404. this to me seems like the “best of” all of the groovebox/sample-based portable workstations that came before it. i really dont understand all of the negativity
imagine releasing an affordable handheld sampler that does more than anything in its league, as a no name operation with very little staff or the backing of a massive corporation behind you. and you choose to continue to bring free updates to your device based on constant endless user requests while interacting with your customers personally online and keeping up with all of the new feedback from the people using your product. and then you release the thing that everyone has been begging for which competes with AKAI, and arguably is even more appealing, and people are saying this about you. he isnt media trained, he’s not a politician. i think people like this deserve a little more credit
I do think this device looks super cool. I’m trying to decide if it’s just my GAS flaring up though? Haha. Hard to tell. But this thing looks really sweet.
I already have the Tangerine and it’s great. The little voice in my head is like “Sell the Tangerine and pick this up…it does what the Tangerine can do and so much more…!”
On the other hand, for the price it is competing with the Maschine+ and feature-for-feature, I’m not sure the Bento would come out on top. Then again, it’s way more portable, and battery powered, and 1010’s stuff seems to just SOUND really great for some reason.
I’ll be very interested in following the developments as they flesh out the software that’s for sure!
justifying not having to buy a new piece of gear by comparing it to the stuff they already have i guess?
also, i just realized this after looking into the quick start guide recently. the track count isnt even an issue because each track can have 16 loops. you can apparently have like 8 little blackboxes in this thing, unless im misunderstanding that loop track type
yeah i agree with this. for some reason, the blackbox just sounds pristine to me. the pitch shifting and filters are incredible. its the best sounding device i have for pitching a loop up or down, especially like percussive loops, then putting an lfo on a lo - hi pass filter and let it sweep slowly with a little resonance. it sounds very nice to me
When i learned that we could not Sample directly into a DrumKit Pad, nor send Midi out to external gear…i figured I’d hold off until the firmware firms up to a properly vetted device.
I know it wants to do a lot and i love the form factor…but my gut says it’s still a few firmwares away from being where it should be as a 1.0 device.
OPxy and Move holding my attention for the time being.
Interesting to hear so many people vouching for the sound quality of 1010 stuff. I’ve never owned any of their gear, but I’m curious to hear how it compares to the sample engines on, let’s say, the S4 and the Teenage Engineering Field series - purely in terms of sound.
Just posting this here in case anyone wants to be more in the know about what is coming next regarding the Bento firmware. As much as I want to jump in and pre order I’ll probably wait to see how much of this is implemented by end of June. I really hope they eventually add scales and chord modes to the pads
This is from the 1010 forum.
"Hello,
As you know, bento is soon coming to a store near you. In the interest of setting some expectations on coming features, we’re going to go things a little differently this time. We will give you a timetable for the next major release and tell you about the features we are working on.
Please know that we will be working to a schedule. This means the timing is pretty solid–but the feature set is not. If something is not quite ready, we will hold it back for a future update. Said another way, look for at least some of the features we are working on to make it into the release.
We plan to release bento 1.1 by the end of June. Here is what we are working on. Some of these items will be in version 1.1:
Audio Tracks
MIDI Tracks
Scene creation and launching
Song mode
This is just the beginning. We have lots of work to do and look forward to getting to more of your requests in the coming months. Thank you for support.
In one of the super booth videos he said that they plan on making a scrollable list of patterns so it won’t just be 4. Then in scene mode you can combine them in different ways. You can have 16 loops per track as well which is like 8 blackboxes in 1
