With the new update would an external SD card reader now work?
I’m about to buy a field recorder and would love to go from that > digitakt (either via usb browsing the field or sd card)

No. It’s not a USB host so you’ll need a computer or equivalent host in order to transfer samples to it.

would it see the .wav files of a field recorder? eg the zoom ones or Tascam Dr40x
could I play the files and send them via usb to the digitakt now that it has audio over usb?

No, from what I can tell (I don’t have a DT) the only way to get wav files onto the Digitakt is via the Transfer app.
Audio over USB needs a host as well, and I think the only devices that provide this functionality with audio are computers or phones/tablets. I don’t think I’ve seen a field recorder with a host port that can send audio.

Zoom field to iPad. Sd to iPad. iPad to digi. There isn’t any extra ad cause you can use usb to record audio. Might even be a third party file transfer app
