Seeing as how there probably won’t be an “0-Tape” - a semi-modular version of the Tape and Microsound System - coming anytime soon, what might be an equivalent one could put together in modules?
Here is my stab at it. I think it would have to be mono for the price. The 0-size is roughly 44HP; I went with a 48HP 4ms pod.
As you can see by the price, these semimods offer insane value.
I know its not modular, but still think people dreaming of a tape machine maybe should check out Bastl Thyme.
It has modulation on all parameters built in, for example could be 9 seperate LFO’s or envelopes.
It has CV and clock in so should work nicely with modular.
The bitcrush was really really nice!
Had it and it was very cool, but sold it again since I didn’t use it enough, also it was a bit noisy which I’ve seen others complain about too
It seems like a terrific unit. True that if people wanted to go that direction we could then suggest Zoia, Microcosm, Particle, iPad…many others. I think the hope for an 0-Tape is to easily and without workarounds integrate it into modular.
The Thyme is fantastic; noise hasn’t really been too much of an issue for me, and it lives permanently on the cue send of one of my mixers. I must admit that I’ve never used the CV input, nor really the midi - but probably should. I do wish it had an analogue filter though.
Nice one !
So this is just an Fx unit, or is the Clouds 2 filling the granular processing ?
Here is my take on it in 48hp : Pam provides sequencing and LFO duties, Airstreamer as a compact Function generator, MMG as a filter providing striked vactrols organic delight, then a small delay in 2hp.
I’d be more confortable building this in 84hp though, add a few things to get a more complete voice
Ah forgot about Pam’s. Good call. Always forget Pam’s can do so much…
In my version Grandpa would be taking care of the SD playback while Clouds 2 would be taking over for realtime sampling. I guess I would need some kind of mixer in there…maybe L/R input on Clouds 2 would be fine…I didn’t want to do a full Morphagene as I don’t think an 0-Tape would offer the full hog.
Interesting thread. I made the plunge to rack my 0-coast & 0-ctrl together with the Morphagene and a Befaco In & Out into an Arturia Rackbrute 6U. The 0-coast & 0-ctrl gives me enough modulations for now. Just playing and exploring for the forthcoming time to see what would be good additions. So curious what others would add.
Sweet start. I think in your case I would add a utility (I always recommend Cold Mac), filter, random source and FX. You seem to have a good amount of space left with which to work, so you have a lot of options for these things.
Oh yeah, you’re right, it would probably be something like Grandpa or a small Phonogene feature wise. Pam is such a wonderful to any system, can do so much…
I don’t have a Morph but i do own a Phonogene and I still absolutely love it but hen again it’s 2021 so let’s put the last damn thing in it haha ?
Yeah the MMG is sadly discontinued but that’s what i have and I think it would fit nicely in this case… Playing sampled stuff into LPGs brings a very nice feeling to those sounds
What do we know about Clouds 2, exept that it will probably be 14hp ? I see so many original ones going for sell, thinking about selling mine but a this point Emilie didn’t announce anything right ?
We know only what the few teaser-leaks have shown (L/R, Freeze) but it exists and in the wild: Emilie has already gifted it to at least one musician. It’s imminent.
Yeah I’ve heard the Phonogene has a lovely lofi quality to it. True, an MMG would be perfect for a system like this.
Yes indead a sweet start with the 0-'s nearby. Yes a filter, some FX and utillities are on my list, but puzzling wich. Didn’t kow Cold Mac, looks interesting. Random i have from the 0-coast, so not that necessary.
I love theorycrafting together modular rigs. However: anytime I go to look at something that’s sampling based I end up back at the Octatrack. By the time you get one full sampling “voice”, you’re at the cost of an OT (especially if you buy used). With an OT you get… 8. (And 8 tracks of MIDI sequencing!)
Ultimately you’re right. But then it’s not entangled with other modular and - in my case - I get bored/impatient programming a sequence when I could as easily just plug in a cable. Plus while the OT is good at happy accidents its not the same as modular.
But maybe now with MIDI slices on the OT I should think about getting a CV-MIDI module…that might be something…
I use the OT as an ‘end-of-line’ box: live-looper/FX/mangler and not so much for prepared sequences. Just soms occasional sequencing/slicing of the live-sampled loops. As input i use a microFreak and my just started modular with a 0-coast and the morphagene. Best of both worlds, but still exploring.
I tried to make one with in the same HP space as a one of the 0-series devices and keep it in stereo. I dunno I think this looks like it might be fun but a few more HP of space would be nice.
