Overbridge Premium?

Hmmm… In two minds about this. On one hand, I find myself in the “surprised it was free to begin with camp” but on other hand I’m looking at Digitakt and now really struggling to find the appeal with it without OB.

I do think Elektron needed to revise it’s approach to OB. I’m sure many can make strong arguments against this but I would have imposed OB Premium across the range though not a paid upgrade for existing registered devices.

I also wonder how easy it will be (or not) to transfer OB Premium should you want to see your Digitakt…

what does “time limited sessions” mean? that it can only be used for like 1 hour?

I wish they would apply similar “pay more to add missing features” policy to Analog Four. I’d gladly pay the asking price for midi sequencing addon.

does this mean, you can stream from the AR into the DT or the other way round?

I’m not thrilled about this OB development either. I’m definitely in the “surprised OB was free in the first place” camp, but I just don’t like the optics of this. I think that by initially setting the expectation that OB would be free, Elektron now risks alienating their base by trying to have it both ways: OB is still free, but in a much more limited form, but if you want the full feature set you’ll need to pay a bit extra. Better for them to say “hey gang, sorry but this free OB thing is just unsustainable for us. Going forward, it’s going to become a separate product line.” THis is particularly true if future iterations their top-end hardware will follow the tiered OB pricing model.

As a side note, something about the Digitakt in general feels like Apple during the John Sculley years.

Is the Overbridge Premium license on a per-machine bases?

Olly said:

Rytm and A4 is not affected by this and will be Overbridge Premium as standard.

Would a Premium license that comes with an A4 or Rtym allow a Digitakt to use the Premium features?

Having bought an A4 in late 2014 with the promise that I could seamlessly integrate it into my setup via USB I’m also very disappointed that this hasn’t been addressed.

A large part of why I own a couple of Elektron products is the supposed DAW integration and trying to work with the A4 or RYTM in Logic causes far more problems than it solves.

I want to make tunes not spend hours on timing issues that would be easier to solve via traditional midi.

There is no premium licence for A4 etc per se, nor will there be a paid route (unless additional features to those originally advertised are dreamt up, in theory); an A4 can use the OB vst, a digitakt has its own vst and that will require some unlocking, either on the computer or for the device serial … so owning existing ‘unlimited OB’ devices makes no difference whatsoever - they all use separate VSTs

i asked this question several times already. Seems that no one cares. Its a shame !

I expect it hasn’t been decided yet, hence the lack of an answer

yeah, this or they really dont wanna tell us because they say: Hey, its free so shut up, buy the Digitakt and you will see the limit  Or buy the upgrade and have your peace.

Can we get Elektron from the Machinedrum Days back please? Along with Hector?!

Why? It doesn’t cost them any extra.

I’ve already made some comments about this whole thing, some of which got pretty blue, so after a couple days I’d like to summarize my thoughts:

Charging for Overbridge is a very poor move for Elektron, if for no other reason than that the software is still not guaranteed to work. The bugs appear to be largely worked out for Ableton Live users, but from what I’ve gathered as a regular participant of this and other such forums, it is not necessarily fully functional in a number of DAW environments. Multitracking can be problematic. In my own experience with the Analog Keys, OB was essentially useless because it would intermittently transmit all notes to track 1 regardless of settings. It’s an almost there idea that is not yet ready for individual sale.

Maybe beyond that tho, this suggests a bad precedent for Elektron. Part of what has made them appealing is that they have seemed like a company created by musicians for musicians, and as a result they have succeeded in many ways because they have released gear in something of a beta state and have allowed it to grow based on user input. With what we are seeing with the Digitakt and OB Premium, it makes me think that sales and marketing are taking the focus instead, and we’ve already got Roland for that.

I’d pay for a linux version of OB.

Because that’s the only way we can get that feature it seems. Midi sequencing has been requested numerous times over the years but Elektron refuses to add it to Analog Four.

I was thinking maybe they would add it if we sweeten the deal by giving them a bit of money, since they seem to be moving to a model where some features cost extra anyway.

If you kept up to date with the previous discussions on this you would know this is not true, you’d also be aware of the background to their position on it. Anyway, rather than speculating further about this and that (including very improbable os payment scenarios) can we keep it strictly on topic going fwd

I hope you’re not refering to the claim they made at some point that midi sequencing “can’t” be added to A4 as anyone with a slight amount of technical knowledge knows that is simply not true. It would be easy to add but they have decided to cripple the synth to support CV sequencing only, possibly to secure OT sales.

Anyway, back on topic: I wonder if Digitakt OB works better than the Analog series OB since it costs so much? I have had terrible latency issues and noise/crackle issues with Analog Four OB. If Digitakt OB is as unstable, I find it very hard to justify the price tag.

That’s the kind of speculation that has been convincingly disproved … those with plenty of technical knowledge can make the leaps to see it from the other side, everything is nuanced but it’s reduced to black/white for convenience when it’s used to support a flawed argument … no matter how vociferously a group present something it doesn’t make it so … the world is most certainly not flat … Elektron have firmly stated that this premise is flawed and have gone so far as to ask for the propagation of the conspiracy theories to cease … it creates bad blood which is why I am stepping in to say do some research before you continue with the alt-facts, it helps nobody

Frankly all this sales motivated conspiracy talk is beyond dull now … anything that doesn’t fit, let’s call it out as protecting sales … utter nonsense, very illogical, they don’t run a monopoly of gear spend … people could buy any other gear they want. They make focussed gear now.

They’re a business, and a far better business for their consumer than most.

OB on DT could in theory work better, the Elektron DEVS have considerably more USB bandwidth to play with now … USB 2 as opposed to USB 1.1
