Is this forum about gear consumption or about making music?

It’s the opposite for me.
I find it extremely hard to generate GAS over new gear being released these days.
Hasn’t been anything new and ground breaking released for a while now worthy of purchase imo

Elektron is a hardware company. Seems on point to me.

Oh I gotcha,

“groundbreaking” A user can be groundbreaking with mundane devices and also a

groundbreaking device can pull a user out of a mundane experience. Both are possible isn’t it true?

Welcome to music gear discussion forums. Been this way forever.

The Elektron user base can get pretty deep into musical topics, though the signal-to-noise ratio on this new forum is pretty bad in that regard.

Yeah basically.
If a new bit of hardware doesn’t bring anything new to the table then it’s hard to get excited.
I only consider buying hardware that is innovative and explores an area of sound in a way that we haven’t really seen before. It becomes harder over time but you just have to be patient. Innovation is what excites me personally.

I mean, this is an official Elektron forum after all… While I do look forward to reading other people’s opinions, creative insights and listening to their music, you can say I’m guilty of going here primarily for troubleshooting and other gear-related inquiries. Most of my time spent actually discussing music or creativity is done elsewhere.

Maybe you can start topics or suggest song-making challenges?
Say, for example, on the DT, 8 audio tracks, one sample. That’s a lame one but I’m sure everyone here has great suggestions

You are right, here is much exchange about “new” gear and GAS related issues … but not only

Why not asking a precise question and hope to get a good answer or a lively discussion?

A good answer to “how to make music” is hard to give in general. I have had some musical education and consumed textbooks and tutorials. My experience is that there are many angles, opinions, rules and exceptions which might be worth to consider and discuss.

TBH … I am here, because I have found a friendly community, which shares my interest in electronic music equipment and creating electronic music. My local musician and non-musician friends wonder and often don’t understand, why I want to have all those boxes with countless knobs, sliders, and keys. Why am I not just happy playing my guitar or a keyboard, which would be sufficiant enough, to make good music? TBH … they have a point … but I think, we are a special breed of musicians and it feels right to work with this kind of complex gear and it’s good know that we are not alone in the universe

It’s easy to consume but hard to create. With some noble exceptions, most music forums are driven by gas.

I started to use facebook this week
And found dawless jamming
It inspires me…

Any other place you find inspiration?

I’ve found monome community to be interesting and the max forum community too. It’s more about figuring out stuff as opposed to churning through gear

If you like to watch jamming with many synths in real-time and performed by one single person … check out KEBU at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd6ckXKxqQjkFuqx_m5Rwtw

There are some interesting channels on YT. They are easy enough to find.

What about a cooperation project? You can start it everywhere. It’s a big difference doing everything in isolation or together with other people. I get inspiration from preparing and performing music with frinds.

There is also book-ware around, which comes with text and audio examples. It’s a good way to focus on one topic, guided by a professional tutor or writer. Sometimes an educational exercise became the root for a new groove

I have also subscribed to two music related magazines. One is related to making music with computers, the other is more general on technology about studio, recording, mixing, mastering, instruments, or gear. Both deliver inspiration and new paths to follow from time to time.

The importance of talking about gear is that it does help save money for some, by helping them make an informed decision.

But the oscillation of just-enough and too-much is a fine line of electricity

I think this forum is what community want it to be. How i see things is it’s actions from every member to make this forum better. Think how you can : bring your stone to the building. (also read what’s done already, maybe if existing thread well : bring it back to life by contributing your way)

If people are more in actions rather than discussing. Negative threads will start to disappear. And all members will be more to react to very interesting thread rather to think why it’s not like this or like that.

If annoying is to read thread about :

  • good mods/bad mods (because you don’t want their responsibility thrust me…)

  • gas / not gas

  • Old gear / New gear (when it’s not done the cool way and start to look like a WAR)

  • Gear support

It’s our duty to launch better thread in opposition so the balance will be better, just think what thread or share Can bring to the community over the medium or long term. because there’s a lot of thread will take place on short terms ! that’s logical to understand…

Cheers for the inspiration. So simple, and yet so interweaved with our complex existence.
