Your Setups (Part 1)

I’m a grade A lurker here, but figured I’d share my current rig:

Here it is… my updated 2022 “humble” setup. The only thing I don’t have is an Ableton controller. I grew up using Studio One, but I’ve made the switch to Ableton as I feel it is a huge instrument and deserves to be used and is way more interesting than SO, especially Max For Live and such.

  • Elektron Digitone Keys, Elektron Octatrack, Elektron Analog Heat MKII, Moog Werkstatt…

Here’s the interesting bit… I traded my SP404MK2 that I didn’t end up wanting to incorporate into my Elektron flow for a Moog Sirin, Erica Bassline, and a Behringer 303 (I might give away as I don’t like Behringer… I legitimately told the guy I didn’t want it but he gave it anyway)

I’ve been having a great time making music for myself. Honestly it’s never been better without the intent and stress of feeling the need to share it. Not sure I ever will on the internet.

It’s an original I lucked out on way back when through the Target app. I can’t believe the whole process even an entire year after. Scalpers have hoards of them.

You got a Sirin, a baseline and a td3 for a 404 mkII… what a deal.

One of the best deal I’ve seen.

I guess GAS is a sickness.

Lovely selection there!! I’m fighting the urge to go for a Command Easel.

I was in shock honestly, but I couldn’t resist. I didn’t feel bad because I told him the market value online of the Sirin, he was well aware. Apparently he didn’t mind because he got it directly from the Moog factory.

As it says on their site they have been making a limited amount until they run out, only for sale in person.

I will have to buy the wooden side panels for extra warmth.

I’ve had the apartment to myself for a couple of months, and this re-arrangement is one result.

For the curious: the ThinkPad 760XL contains an ES1688 FM chip, & the docking station contains a HardSID ISA (w/6581 SID). These are played over the parallel port MOTU PC-MIDI Flyer, mapped via MIDI-OX. Hidden under the ESQ-1 is a JL Cooper MSB+ patch bay. The QuadraVerb will likely find its way in here from the other room soon, also.

The MoPho is included for color coordination with the Mirage & ESQ-1. (I suppose the yellow Behringer TD-3 would alternatively fit… but I’m sentimental toward the MoPho.)

Octatrack has taken the place of my ASR-X Pro in this Ensoniq & HardSID flow. Not missing much from that exchange. Some of the ASR-X Pro FX are quite gnarly, pad mapping is pretty cool, filters & LFOs & envelopes are first-class. But not really missing its twiddly/fiddly obnoxious-knobs and SCSI storage / SMDI transfer. Sometimes the Octatrack reminds me of the whiz-kid offspring of an ASR-X Pro mated with Emagic Notator (especially arrangement mode), which is like a dream.

Had a jam with a friend this weekend, his Hydra Deluxe and my modular. These jams happen less frequently these days (because of covid and everything else) so it was extra fun to get together and make crazy sounds all day. Hoping to do more of this soon, and hey maybe next time we’ll even remember to hit record.

Oooo HardSID! Nice! I had a SID Station (that I customized) back when those were out, so I never grabbed one. Always wanted one though.

Nice! Loving my HSD! Can’t wait to integrate some modular. I need to make a 3.5mm to banana conversion panel first though.

That’s gonna make for a sweet combination! I was surprised to see all of the CV connectivity on the HSD, looks like you could really do a lot with it. Looking forward to seeing you bring it all together, your panels are so awesome!
