Your modulars (Part 1)

“I will NOT fall down any modular rabbit hole.”

Famous last words

Seriously tho, modular is the best… and the worst? I definitely hate love it (mostly love tho!)

The beauty is modular gear is easier to ship, you can swap out voices, effects and sequencers all day long and keep your favorite lfos, vcas and other utilities!

Any Assimil8or users excited for this?

No additional info yet other than what’s on the webpage. Was apparently on show at NAMM but no demos have surfaced.
Likely to be an instabuy I reckon.

People actually own Assimil8tor? I thought everyone just yearned tragically for it.

Nice, you saved room for 8 Plaits. Who said polyphony was hard to do in Eurorack?

Do people here have favourite manual control modules?

I’m considering something like a Tetrapad or Pressure Points, perhaps one of the joystick options. Ideally I think I’d like it to provide touch/manual gate/voltage and some cv modulations outputs that I could loop. Maybe also random gates, again ideally that I could loop.

Something like Tetrapad looks nice but for looping it needs the Tete and becomes pretty costly. Something smaller and simpler like the new Clank Thererec might also be a first try?

What are the manual input modules that people here use, and how do you like them?

I have and really like Intellijel Planar 2, very nice feeling joystick that stays in position when you let it go, gate button and record function. The joystick movements are also cv-controllable. I have not tested but have heard good things about the Erica Joystick2 as well, internal lfo’s and drone oscillator but shorter record time. Would love to try it some time.

Ive heard the Intellijel modules you mention - including (edit: new) Planar - are unobtanium. So something to consider.

Pressure Points touch response can be hit or miss for systems. Also something to bear in mind.

Not helpful as it’s unobtanium, but I like using Cold Mac as a macro control.

O-Ctrl has pressure and can loop voltages.

Are u in the UK? I’m sort of interested in the Shapeshifer - did a search on gumtree yesterday and there are 2 planars for sale - a 1 and 2

What I use:

  • Black Joystick 2. Only caveat is not syncable but that’s not a problem for me. There’s a stepped rand, LFO, oscillator modes on top of 1:1 joystick control which are super useful.

  • ADDAC Transitions as a macro that can be cved.

  • For touchplate operation with pressure control Plinky is the GOAT, but that’s 100% unobtanium. Sold Pressure Points, not a good design.

  • Yet to ship is Bela.io Gliss, a 5 finger pressure sensitive recordable motion touch strip with very nice modes.

  • Can also recommend Herzlich MMI Maxima as chaotic (or not) finger patching surface.

That’s what I had heard but have just gone to take a cursory look and I don’t see it in some stores I checked but on MG there are a number used.

I built a Transient Modules 7J a while back and it’s a real nice, space efficient joystick controller. Doens’t have the functionality of something like a Planar but depending on what you need that could be overkill anyway - i think it uses the same joystick component.

I currently use a Music Thing Modular ‘Control’ which has 5U format pots (lush!) and a couple of cool outputs for extra modulation:

And I have a couple of WGD Modular Donuts (edit: oops, these are Bagels) which are a bit smaller but the pots on the ‘Control’ keep me coming back

I’ve been sending a clock to Quaid megaslope and using it as sort of a secondary manual type modulation source, I imagine stages would would well like this also. Personally prefer it to the joystick in like my syntrx but syntrx mk1 is a dead simple joystick implementation.

Something nice from alm

Thanks everyone for responding. I’ll react to this but it’s a general response. I think that it’s a no-go for me that Black Joystick isn’t syncable. I make loopy techno so that’s exactly what I want it for. (Only I’m curious to add some human touch through some kind of interface like a joystick or touch-plates)

I might just wait until Planar comes back in stock, even if it’s half a year from now!

No one with Intellijel’s Tetrapad & Tete?

I do have Tete and Tetrapad, on my desk waiting for me to mount them in my case. I have had a really busy month so no time for them yet. Hopefully I will have some time this weekend to start using them.
There is a pretty good deal on the combo on a swedish second hand market site (~€430 for both) right now. PM if you want the link. I PM’d you the link.
Also I just checked an thomann has them in stock as well.
