Ok that’s cool but I would also want to have all these outs in the pic below to be fed in to the case too so I can process individual drums with modular FX then take the whole case back out as a stereo mix, possible?
I imagine myself fighting with the sliders on the Varigate.
But, for having both CV and gate channels, it’s a great option. Malekko gear is pretty nice.
In regard to trigger sequencing, I’m looking for a combination of xox-style (WYSIWYG) and algorithmic, nice mute mode, not too wide. SWT16+ could be it.
Dot looks a bit fiddly (also pretty cool), but using the step recording might actually work. Two of those could cover my needs.
Behringer website seems to suggest your Four Play can amplify line level signals. I would get a couple of adapter 3.5mm to 1/4in cables such as below and for example connect the bass drum output to a four play input.
Sometimes better to start small and not go overkill. Might be that you decide you don’t need to process so many outs.
Basically I just don’t see the point in me spending £1500 or more on separate drum modules if I can somehow use my external drum machines freeing my case up for more OSC and Voice modules and sequencers.
So if I can get all my audio from the drum machine in to the case and mangle them there i’ll be more than happy with 1 case and 1 drum machine for travelling although I don’t mind at home as I have proper mixers/iConnectivity XL’s n stuff
True I may only want to process 4 of the individual outs on the drum machine and the rest of them can be summed to the main mono out so I could get away with with 4-5 inputs really. I only have 1 drum module for kicks “Jomox Mod Bass 09 MKII” so I’m sorted in that department. I can use the drum machine for other sounds.
I completely agree. Modular + drum machine makes a lot of sense, especially for techno.
I don’t own a lot of dedicated drum modules either, very little in fact. But I love patching drum sounds from scratch.
While the saying goes you can never have enough VCAs, that’s very true. But my impression at this point, is you actually can never have enough ENVELOPES
The difference is that one was designed and manufactured by an SMB that has contributed a great deal to the modular community while the other is a not-so-blatant rip off of the other by a major conglomerate producing in China that was named, it seems, by a pre-prepubescent boy.
Befaco VCMC is probably the most capable in-rack CV to MIDI: gives you 8 gate -> MIDI, 8 CV -> MIDI, and 8 sliders that you can use for attenuation or as MIDI message generators themselves. Can send the MIDI out over DIN port or USB so flexible out of the box with no annoying expander modules needed. You can pretty much get any MIDI message possible out of it by assigning behaviour of the convertors, and it has some nice features like setting the range on the MIDI output (i.e. attenuation without needing to do it in your rack beforehand). The nice thing is you can simulate your external MIDI gear being ‘in’ the modular by setting up CV -> CC converters for the CC that controls the parameters you want modulating, at the same time as sending your gates and pitch info.
Bunch of options for boosting line level to Eurorack, they’re basically all approximately the same since it’s a straightforward job - just get as many inputs as you need. The Pico modules that do this are only 3HP per 2 inputs, which is good for saving rack space. You don’t necessarily need anything special to get the audio back out again as long as you put the signals through attenuators before you get them back into your mixer, then just use your 3.5mm to 1/4 cables there.
I went down this route of trying to make my eurorack the centre of my setup, so sending out midi/cv/audio to external gear, and then having audio etc coming back in.
in the end I found it was getting pretty expensive and starting to take up quite a lot of HP.
not only do you need various midi -> cv -> mid modules, but also a number of input and output modules to do the line->modular->line conversions (I used ladik which were pretty good value).
then (potentially stereo) mixers with lots channels (>4) are also expensive in eurorack.
so I kind of aborted that route.
what Ive done, is move to try to keep eurorack for things that are a bit unique - things like voices, fx… I treat it like a standalone instrument (albeit it morphs function )
the externally, I have a mixer (actually now I use a 16 io audio interface ), sequencer, poly synth etc.
and I just send audio or midi from these where needed for things like FX.
so, I still do have interfacing stuff in eurorack (midi cv/sequencers/io modules) but really just enough for the rack to be considered a ‘standalone’ instrument rather than it having to be paired with external gear. (and also, left over from my above aborted attempt !)
for me, the problem I had with Eurorack is, I find it easy to get pulled in… to make it the centre of everything - and before long, I find myself shopping for lots of modules to make it work.
so, Im trying to give it a more limited/focus task - and integrate it with external gear, and really try not to be creating the ‘ideal’ setup as I have in the past
1 - A setup at home that I could use the Modular along with my other hardware synths/mixers etc
The above would be no problem at all for me with the gear I already have however
2 - A setup for travelling/gigs consisting of 1 case of oscs and fx etc and 1 external hardware drum machine
The second one I listed here was what I’m really wanting to do however without an external drum machine and to replicate my drum machine in modules is just silly money when I already have the sounds in a box.
So I’m thinking I need
Midi module and clock- midi out to midi in of the drum machine generated from something like these
I’m not bothered about programming patterns in euro rack as I like to build my own on the drum machine and tweak live.
Also I know exactly what I’m wanting to do with my gear and it’s no problem in an all hardware synth world but being new to modular I have to adapt and it’s so confusing knowing what you want but can’t explain it lol
