Your favorite long, evolving tracks

One of my favorite artists just put out an album where the average song length was like 2 minutes. None of them have time to evolve or go anywhere or tell any sort of story. Felt like eating fast food. Got me really missing longer tracks that took you somewhere. What are your favorites? I would love some recommendations, especially newer stuff released in the last few years.

I did an experiment at the beginning of this year where I made a one minute track each day. I listen back at the end of the month. They were terrible. Exactly the shortcomings (no pun intended) that you described.

For long evolving music I think of early krautrock some of the weirder output of Coil or Nurse With Wound.

I am currently in my “trance” mood. Just finished a track a few days ago and finishing another one (2025 may be a trance year for me?) So here it is a huge inspiration and one of my favorites:

The other one is obviously a GOAT candidate track:

parallel 9 by four tet evolves in a way that i find really enjoyable

These first two aren’t exactly newer tracks, but they are timeless:

Panda Bear - “Bros” is a track that evolves nicely and takes you on quite the journey.

Sonic Youth - “Teenage Riot” also evolves nicely, and in an energetic way, and it does not feel like it is 7 minutes long.

For something newer, I think The Chemical Brothers are great an evolving their tracks. This track is off their recent album, and although it is only 5 minutes long, it’s taking you somewhere.

Burial’s “Kindred”

It’s one of my favorite pieces of music ever, regardless of genre. It goes over 11 minutes without ever feeling boring or too repetitive.

Kuiper by Floating Points is an 18 min tour of the Solar System. It has quite clear movements and moods. It’s b-side is 14 mins the same mood and goes almost nowhere, but sorta hypnotises you as it goes.

One track… More than one hour long… Can’t say for sure it’s anyone fav track  but it was an experiment I’ve wanted to try for a long time…

my favorite long, evolving tracks?
well, the golden era of goa trance, literally dozens of them.
(i still consider anything less than 8 mins too short)

Excellent pick. Also this one, though I am not really sure it evolves in a traditional way.

I think this is my all time favorite, Yeah (Crass version) LCD Soundsystem. An orgy of synths and percussion.

(This Pink Floyd one when smoking things as an adolescent)

Glass Jar by Gang Gang Dance is one of my faves. The ending is worth it.

Also “I can hear everything. It’s everything time” is one of the best and most appropriate album opening lyrics.
