Yet another Machinedrum repair thread

It’s not an easy job and a few people from this forum have broken their MDs attempting to do it. I wouldn’t attempt it unless you’ve had decent experience desoldering before. Separate thread here….

What most people fail to understand is that adding new leaded solder can significantly ease the de-soldering process. I have also replaced a MnM screen for my friend, I would not call my self a “tech” and it was doable, patience is the key. No need for a pump, but makes the job a lot easier. If you are unsure about your skills, then definitely don’t do it. However a reasonable skilled person with some experience can do it. I am just saying it’s not rocket science. Yes the UI board of course needs to be removed.

I ordered this one a few weeks ago and it just arrived.
Saw someone on Instagram had replaced their MD screen with this exact model. It looked good and is much cheaper.

Going to replace next week and use a Hakko FR301 desolder gun

It’s not that easy, especially when the soldering is old.
There are 20 spots to be cleaned of lead so that you can remove the screen board, it requires patience and there are risks to damage the screen.
Not such an easy replacement. But not rocket science either, indeed.

The best way to remove lead is with a desolder gun and doing little circles around the pin until you feel it loose.

Why would it matter if the screen gets damaged, it needs to be changed anyway

When you are damaging further something that you’re trying to repair, you are like on a path where you can’t come back, and usure there is a way to your goal.
Quite a difficult situation I’ve been through with my Monomachine, until I du ally managed to fix it.

No, it is not the simple guitar fuzz assembling.
It requires a bit of experience IMO.
But after you’ve done it once successfully, I guess it indeed feels pretty easy.

I remember the stress, though.
