Writing songs with Elektrons

I make pretty straightforward hip-hop beats, but yeah I pretty much always make a nice little pattern chain and call it a day.

I’ve got conditional trigs going so some patterns are really 128 step patterns. But there’s like 5 of them all told.

It’s all good fun. A song mode or saving chains would be nice but my stuff is pretty simple for the most part.

…i’m not into four to the floor production anymore since ages…
…and some of biggest songs where written along to elektron patterns…

especially the a4 did GREAT comfort in sonic uniqueness and creating harmonic progression to my pieces…

For a while, I messed around with using 12 bar blues structures.

I got you covered, full songs with different sections in unusual time signatures (using DT, DN, OT, don’t have a AR):

Pop in 7/4:

This one goes from 5/4 to 3/4 to 4/4, but there’s always some polymeric elements coming in and out, basically a prog rock song with mostly drum machines and synths, although there’s some guitar in it:

This one is 4/4, but has some track scale tricks and tempo changes that makes it feel like triplets or something (different project):

I think elektrons are great to write songs with, especially the DT and DN, as they are almost predetermined for different song sections with their kit per pattern structure.

Nice! Cool to hear some more formulaic zones. Do you play live with Elektrons?

Thanks! Yes, all the real war stuff was performed live in 2017 and 2018 as a 2 piece. I did the music with a DT (which sequenced a volca fm and streichfett), an op-1 and a guitar, while a friend did all the vocals. Fun times.

I only write songs with intro’s, verses, chorus etc. And I use a few Elektron bits along the way not least the DN (midi parts and sometimes it’s own synth engine too) I make each part of the song on a separate program then go from there into the daw for final arrangement and mixing. Used to use the Rytm in the same way with a bit more real time tweaking and synced via midi to the DN until it’s pads crapped out.

Really sick groove on this.

Unfolds nicely with the trigs.

that sounds like an interesting process. would be interested to hear for sure.

pads crapped out on my ARmkii as well. Sending it in for repair tomorrow actually.

Luckily I have another one which seems to be super solid. Just gonna sell my old one once I get it back from repair.

Gonna try and make a video of a full tune I just finished on the rytm. Been sampling electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electric bass and using the A4 for pad synths and melody. Sounds fucking massive with just a few elements haha. (I do add FX in Luna though)

Same on this end. You can get pretty gritty drums IMO right in the box with the sample. dirt and comp [Stream Zebrauh by CzarMusik | Czar Musik | Listen online for free on SoundCloud] (Stream Zebrauh by CzarMusik | Czar Musik | Listen online for free on SoundCloud) unfinished tracks here that need some work but…

This is pretty much all I know how to do. I’ve been using the AR2 on songs and recently (last week) got an A4 with the intention of using it alongside the AR for synth pop.
Have just mixed the tracks featuring the AR and will be sending to mastering next week. I’ll share when they’re available.

Today I’m hoping to work up a song my friend demo’d ~10 years ago. Will share.
