Work out music? Suggestions and playlists?

Hi all

I recently started taking my physical healthy more seriously. A sedentary job and geeky hobbies don’t really cut it when it comes to cardiological health and keeping muscles in shape as age progresses.

This means that i have now taken more classes in my local gym and i must admit that i am a bit appalled by the music during workouts. Yes, it delivers the energy needed, but it is really uninspiring. I know they cant play Autechre or Aphex Twin to motivate weight lifting but still…

The question that i am really asking you all, is if you have suggestions for more interesting upbeat work-out music when running and working out on my own. My intention is not trying to influence the normies at the gym, just expanding my own horizon.

Playlists, links, etc is much appreciated

I love running to @ylva’s music, especially LYV 1&2. Anything forward pushing and upbeat is great really, Todd Terje is great, LCD Soundsystem, I could list a ton of artists. Maybe you just try your favorite music and see what works for you? Maybe you have some favorite „driving a car“ music, that usually works as well (War on Drugs is a great car and running band, for example). Good luck and enjoy it! From my experience with running, it only takes a few sessions until you can enjoy it and not just feel the exhaustion. Music is a great motivation to push you!

If you don’t mind some Hip Hop then I would recommend this one. A continuous mix of Aesop Rock tracks originally released for running exercises but works for all workouts obviously. Never gets old for me

I know the term yacht rock is played out today. But this 10 year old playlist got me back into running. Only 70mins long but has 50 tracks. An excellent mix with smooth transitions that keeps the energy moving. When “ride like the wind” hits you’ll be digging deep to give it all ya got.

This album by soul wax worked very well for me

gotta be trap & drill music only for me. Can’t keep the gym momentum with anything too “cinematic”, textural or exploratory. Can’t do oldskool rap or techno. I havent kept up so closely in the past few years but have a playlist comprised of creme de la creme mid-late 2010s hard stuff.

stuff like this

(Let’s get) Physical - Revolting Cocks

Avid runner here, and I while I sometimes listen to energetic, rhythmic stuff, I often reach for drone-y or spacious music; I find running pretty hypnotic and I like tracks that match that vibe. Lieven Martens Moana, Natural Information Society, Hamza El Din’s Eclipse…

I usually use my work outs to discover new music, so I’ll just search for some playlists or dj sets and like/heart the tracks I really like so I can find them later.
I also enjoy listening to audio books, or most of the time narrations of short stories.

I quite often listen to John Digweed’s Transitions mixes when out running. New editions uploaded quite regularly to Soundcloud.

Also appreciate that he includes track listings to credit / promote the artists.

I can relate. When I was exercising at commercial gyms, they all chose to play the worst quality pop songs of the day rather than the ones I actually liked.

Because of that experience I can’t listen to music when I work out now

Thought you were gonna say ‘because of that I can’t work out anymore’ and I was thinking to myself “hard relate!!!” lol

need to get back into the gym habit over here

@Rokoko if you use Sp@tify I can share my gym playlist with you, got a bunch of jams on it.

The “medellin techno podcast”. It’s my absolute favorite podcast to work out to next to Adam Beyers Drumcode podcast. The Medellin Techno series is weekly, so new drops come out regularly and are good quality. Seriously good to work out to and hasn’t let me down yet (been listening for a year now).

I use the Antennae Pod app on my DAP player (works on iOS or Android).

These days, Midnight is what really gets me pumped. That said, why not just put on song headphones?

I started going to the gym this year seriously thanks to of my co-workers. I mostly lift weights only.
When doing the treadmill, I watch longform Youtube vids or tutorials.

When I lift weights I tend to listen metal albums. This month’s selection:

However if I were to listen to something electronic to get me hype, I’d probably make a playlist of Hocico songs.

An example:

Thank you for all the great suggestions. I will definetly give them a go and also use the work out sessions as a setting to discover new music as @Schnork suggests

I know i did not specify genre that was somewhat intentional to get a broad debate going. LCD soundsystem and indie/rock is something i have listened to a lot during the years, but somehow i don’t find it that fitting for workout. Maybe the EDM vibe in gyms is what makes me go in a techno/etc direction.
Hiphop is really not my thing but might give the suggestions a listen anyway.

@aizoyurei good idea with some metal. I have been listening to Hammerfall and Iron Maiden during runs before… and it really does have a motivational effect.

@maymind_trax yeah i am still on spotify, so thank you for the offer, i will send you a dm

…i’m no gym guy at all…but my day always starts with silly slomo shadow dancing, 50 push ups and a few minutes of planking…all in thai chi go with the flow style…

and my bt headphones…if u do u in all sorts of sportive activities, all on ur own, i don’t see any chance for playlists that make everybody else also happy while pushing for their personal fitness goals…it’s a private headphone thing…

the nine inch noize album is awesome for the gym
