Yep would need to be built from ground up on dedicated hardware with abstracting software framework.
Just well defined interfaces, together with an example implementation for each module.
Lets call it “digital” modular system 
This will be the future for digital instruments!
The vast majority of open source projects are an unusable mess, in my experience.

I wish that Elektron re-write the track effects algorithms and drop the ‘old’ ones.

For those keeping track: this was fixed in 1.40.
Stereo audio from the A/B inputs sent to a THRU machine was summed to mono when the THRU machine was triggered in CHROMATIC TRIG mode.
