Will the Digitakt be useful if I have the Professional version of my DAW? If not, what would be most useful?

I feel like I’m missing something in my setup but I don’t know what.

Studio One 4 Professional, Moog Sub Phatty, Elektron Digitone, and Fender Stratocaster…

Will the Digitakt pair well with that setup? I’m not interested in portability or creation on the go… My DAW has a sampler, tons of samples, and all sorts of features.

If you don’t think the Digitakt would be useful would anything be? Or should I just hit the content button for the first time in years? (Also no need to mention MIDI controllers, looking moreso for hardware synths, grooveboxes, samplers, etc. within a reasonable price)

Thanks

The Synthstorm Deluge seems necessary

Mmm…not sure why you would think that

Mostly in jest.

Mostly.

For resampling… maybe… But if you’re content with your DAW, it seems like a waste. VSTs (even free ones) are powerful as hell these days.

Yea there are a lot of VSTs on sale currently for Black Friday. I have LennarDigital and Serum on my Christmas list

I’ve been a guitar player but always loved hardware. Majored in computer engineering ironically and created simple digital synths but never cared for them myself until recently.

I just think if it weren’t for the mobile aspect for live and midi sequencing features, I’d probably never have bought it. (And, the Digitone has the same sequencer anyway…)

If you don’t need something portable I would only buy stuff that you can’t do with your current setup.

Best to first figure out what it is that you think you are missing. As long as that is unclear, you are probably not missing anything. if you are happy with the sampler from s4 than adding a hardware sampler wouldn’t be my first choice.

With the stuff you have you already could write an entire album, multiple even.

So, what do you think you are missing exactly? Is it workflow related. like missing a sketch pad. Or sound related?

The question that you really need to ask yourself is whether the final product or the process is of making the product is important to you. It’s probably somewhere in between the two. Finishing music on a DAW is easier (for me), but more enjoyable on hardware.

I don’t own a digitakt but do own an Octatrack, and I feel like it brings me to strange but controllable places quicker than a daw. I do think that that’s specific to an Octatrack though, which I would highly recommend. From my understanding, the digitakt is good for quickly laying down tracks while the octatrack can go somewhat deeper.

It’s workflow related I think.

Like I said I know a decent bit about virtual stuff and can even code some but it’s not my preference.

As someone who plays guitar using the Digitone was a revelation. I made tracks for 2-3 years using just my Studio One DAW, Fender, and cheap synth. They were good. But when I added the Digitone to the mix with its workflow I made a killer second day I had it. I never touched the sampler in SO but after trying the DN it seems capable enough.

I think I’m mainly interested in things that feel like unique instruments or help workflow. Also mentioned in another thread Presonus who created my DAW has a new relatively cheap controller out. Maybe that’s what’s missing, just to keep my hands off the mouse as much as possible.

(Until mastering and such that is  )

Cool. Well digitakt is great to get new ideas out very fast and direct. And it’s a wonderful pair with DN. So if you’re looking for a box with the workflow of DN but more grooveboxy than you’ll love the DT. It’s more or less how I work. I use studio one.

And with OB coming, you’ve got the hybrid workflow to boot.

Ah yes forgot all about OB since it’s not out yet. That would be fantastic.

I’m interested in being able to perform most of my music live, with little help. When I say portability I mean taking it to the park or coffee shop to work doesn’t interest me.

I’m used to lugging huge amps around for live performances.

What’s missing from your music?

Better workflow and one that induces spontaneity I can ride with to create a unique/recognizable sound.

What do you think is wrong with the mpc style plugin for studio one?

What do you like what don’t you like?

I go through periods where I only work on the DAW, also probably did 15-20 tracks in a row just on my Digitakt. Then added a looper and an 0Coast to that.

For the past few months I go between my DAW and Octatrack…might be a strange work flow, but I record sounds, effects and sometimes beats into Logic, save the sounds to a folder, load up my OT and see where it takes me. Once I have a few good patterns and scenes, it tends to go back into Logic for final editing and mixing. The Octatrack is just too much fun to resist and I know there will be surprises. Most of em, nice surprises…things I just never would’ve thought of in Logic.
