Why is there no good small hardware multitrack recorder?

agree on the h6essential, although it has “only” 3 stereo-ins.

Zoom Livetrak is also really cool, L-8 has four stereo-ins, L-20 ten stereo-ins, for example

sound devices mix pre series, but not cheap. best pre-amps i’ve used on any interface

Ive just bought the Portatron. A 4 track replica of the Tascam 4 track tape recorder. This thing is ingenious. But its a plugin. Its not cheap but its opened up so many possibilities.

RME UCX II can be used standalone, and can record to a USB drive… no audio editing directly on the RME, but a computer is a million times better for that anyway.

Portatron is a gimmick it cant record anything

Give up and buy the bluebox so that they release mk2 right afterwards and then I can buy that

M-Live B.Beat Pro 16

16 channel multi-track player/recorder

There’s 1010music Bluebox… Does pretty much everything you want. OK, editing is not that great. No USB storage but SD card and it can act as USB audio interface. Effects are pretty good actually.

OP can have my BlueBox.

When you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Absolutely not, i’m in the same boat. I had an OP-1 and that workflow would be great. But with more tracks and normal ins/outs and at least 4 stereo tracks to record at the same time. But including the simple sampler for ‘editing’ smalle snippets of audio. I’m very curious what the Thingstone Track8 will be like, it has at least all the editing stuff. But only one stereo track recording :frowning:

This reads like the start of an advertisement for the 1010 Bluebox.

Yeah this thread got me thinking. A slightly larger Tx-6 sized box with an OP-1 sized display that allowed for sequencing & sampling similar to the op-1s tape view with 4-6 stereo ins would be an instant buy for me.

One of the reasons I purchased the UCX II

But it is “only” class compliant, right? So, not multichannel, but stereo in and stereo out…

Yep. Only stereo. It does work but I wouldn’t recommend it too highly because the firmware updates are very lackluster… If it does everything you need right now, go for it. But don’t get your hopes up for many more features in the future.

Zoom LiveTrak series.
L-8 is not that big at all.
no MIDI clock/sync though — but it’s super rare feature these days anyway.

I am considering buying it as I sold my TX6. I don’t understand the number of input, is it 4 or 6?

Maybe a Steam Deck with the DAW of your choice + a small audio interface.
