so looks like my fourth md has bricked
Maybe there is a workaround. Unfortunately, “brick” is too vague a “symptom” to diagnose…
We need:
Humidity levels in your space over the last three years
Finger sweat readings
Electricity flow stability diagnostics
Capacitance flow data
But I’m sorry to hear this. I hope there’s salvage/repair potentials.
easy fix insofar as its in a drawer out of sight until there is a need to smash something with a large heavy milled steel block full of swedish electronica
flashes k and x.09 on flickering start up screen but never starts - can go to test mode but all tests fine - but it won’t reset itself it says it can receive midi so maybe i will try shocking it with an update - alternatively you could have it for nothing if you promise to never tell me what you have done with it
Have you tried disassembly, cleaning the ribbon cable connectors (if they’ve oxidised), and reconnecting them? I’ve heard this can revive a borked machinedrum (although not always). For the 10 minutes it’ll take, worth a shot!
cheers i will look at that
That’s kinda what I thought the issue was. That’s why I wanted more info.
This is a thing that seems to come up with all Machinedrums and Monomachines as they continue to age. There are a few threads in here about it. As @Raeballz mentioned, one fix to open up the unit and check that all the ribbon cables are well connected and tight, which sometimes requires for the pins to be slightly bent so that pin connectors are more snug, less lose. This is also a recommendation from Elektron support.
My MNM has suffered from this several times but I was able to solve it and it’s been good for a year now. My MD is still OK, but I expect to be doing these things to it in the future (same to the MNM even if it’s stable today).
I will happily take you up on that.
so you have a pile of five of them? or did you fix and sell the others, sell as bricked, or something else…?
fixed and sold, or sold with issues - this one was bought last year with a new blue screen fitted and a full set of new encoders and a new psu so i thought it would last a bit longer than a year as all the work had already been done but i guess there may be some electrical issue in my house that kills them
but who are you?
ok thanks i will try this when i have some time and feeling brave
i have this weird urge to put it in the freezer too, will that work?
My first primary suspect is always the PSU. If you can, get another one from Elektron.
Edit: PSU meaning power supply just to be clear.
yeah its an aftermarket one from a local tech call ‘plasma music’ so it should work well as he is an electronics engineer
If it can run test mode and won’t go beyond the splash screen then that suggests the bootloader is having trouble running whatever firmware is loaded in there. Try loading the last official Elektron FW via MIDI in the test mode.
good suggestion thank you
what usb to midi cable would you recommend?
i ordered a CME one…hope it works
Anything except some super cheap Chinese tat. The Roland one is probably fine. Or use the MIDI ports on your audio interface (if it has any).
