When you read about it, above 1:10 is usually considered limiting, but I actually did run some tests out of curiosity. Can the OT comp really prevent a signal from getting above the treshold? And turns out it can. Tested with delay feedback, filter res, wavefolders and mixer feedback and it really does a great job.
Here’s a good video on what you can do with it.
Check the chapter on attack/release modulation.
Yeah! Sometimes I use it as a safety measure for feedback, like literal feedback with an output routed into an input or with FX feedback, like chorus or whatever. It’s basically a limiter over about 9-10 o’clock on the ratio knob, but with crazy stuff like that I just turn ratio to the max.
I have a bunch of hardware compressors and limiters, but these days I mostly use the OT compressor. It took me a long time to get a feel for it – at first I was over-compressing everything and thought of it as “too smashy”, but I was just using the wrong settings for my sounds. In general it takes me a long time to get to know compressors due to their subtleties, maybe I don’t hear very well:)
