Where should an Elektronaut find Modular advice?

Hey all

Where is a good place to get advice on a modular rig idea, if one is not All About Modular? I know the usual haunts for people who are totally dedicated to the idea (Muff Wiggler etc), and much respect to them (and much gratitude, I’ve learned so much from their sharing). Now I’m seeking advice from people with an Elektron state of mind, let’s say. People who like the tactile but are also OK with hybrid setups :robot: Enthusiastic about inspiring and learnable interfaces, but who also find creativity and constraints work together

Any takers here? Or any pointers to a preferred place to ask? Thank you!

Where I’m coming from

Originally deeply intimate with Ableton and enjoyed it, but I got weary of the screen time.

Analog 4 totally reinvigorated me and inspires me still. I added a Digitakt and Make Noise 0-Coast to do more off-screen, and the setup has been a joy to play.

Style/needs-wise, I do both original synths and sample based stuff, and a lot of resampling. Ambient sometimes, rhythmic things sometimes. Re: modular understanding, I am well-versed in various synthesis techniques, though there will surely be more modular-specific learning curve.

I’m looking for studio usage, not gigging. So portability isn’t one of my needs.

So now! I’m curious about complementing further with a small modular rig; skiff or, more likely, Intellijel 4U.

Rack ideas (Modular Grid brainstorms)

I have a ModularGrid ā€œcomplete ideaā€ sketch and a reduced ā€œstarting pointā€ sketch.

So of course to start I will only buy a few modules at first and fill with cardboard blanks … Here is one sketch of what would be first maybe https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/776187

How I got here/ why I’m thinking this way

Sharing this in case it shares some fun ideas to others in similar boat

I’m focusing on the Make Noise Morphagene for its unique abilities (have watched many hours of video of it, and I really love what I’ve seen). The flow I expect is to have sounds bouncing between the outboard synths and samples, into Digitakt and Morphagene (and repeat; using a Soundcraft mixer to send all this around)… Already have this happening with {Digitakt, Ableton}, Will be great to have it between {Digitakt, Morphagene/Rack, Ableton}.

How I arrived at this arrangement: learned about about tonnnnns of interesting modules, got way overwhelmed, but kept coming back (slowly, over months). I really love Make Noise’s modules and approach, and have loved my 0-Coast, so I took some essentials from the Make Noise System Cartesian and watched about similar setups to see how they work.

Then from the various demos I started subtracting some of the synth power, since I have some great things going for that already, outside of the Rack. I also decided to hold off on things like Mutable Instruments Clouds, Rings, etc., because even though they seem wonderful, they’d be the least different from what I already do with Ableton, Max, etc…

(Side note I will eventually play with VCVRack and may get an ES-8 eventually. I love the idea of having core things in the rack, then prototyping possible extensions with Reaktor Blocks and/or VCVRack… For example VCVRack has ports of all those great Mutable Instruments modules I’m initially deferring. VCVRack is such a great project, and I love that MI collaborated on this, and open-sourced their modules.)

Wow much longer post than I intended. Hope that is OK. So yeah anybody here have thoughts, or if I’m barking up the wrong tree, pointers to somewhere else?

Muffs has tons of great posts. Check that out. Theres years of content and most of the cats there are nice.

I would get Morphogene, a copy of Reaktor Blocks plus the ES-8 and then build from there. Muffwiggler is the place to ask…

Thanks all! Yeah I have researched a lot on Muffs back archives, it’s just not my first choice for advice on this. Analogy: I would rather talk about speakers/monitors/headphones with other home studio folks, than audiophiles—though I might lurk audiophile forums for some information to consider with the rest.

llllllll.co is a great call, I lurked it for a while but it slipped my mind thinking of asking about modular entry points

+1 https://muffwiggler.com

Also for fellow journeyers, regarding the hybrid approach with VCVRack or Reaktor Blocks, and using the Expert Sleepers module (ES-8)—this is a great 101 video if you have not seen it demo’d before:

Not interesting for the sounds (that’s not the point of that one), just a clear demonstration of how easy it can be and how one can easily have multiple ā€œround tripsā€ between the hardware and software.

This is my latest doodle of eventual rack based on continuing to learn more, watch vids, etc

It’s definitely not a self-contained unit with all the utils etc. Some parts can be somewhat independent (right side), so I would possibly actually just start with that side of the modules (Morphagene, Erbe-Verb, Ears). as for the synthesis parts It assumes it will work with my external gear—0-coast, Elektron, etc; and Disting and ES-8(VCVRack). Hence few VCAs, no clock/seq, etc  Oh — Neat trick for getting some additional (weird) hardware VCA(s) without using rack space: http://www.mysticcircuits.com/p/0hp-vactrol-modules.html

It seems like a bundle of fun.

Next I’m going to ask for more feedback/suggestions from LINES and my friendly neighborhood synth store — Control Voltage

Lines is cool. I get a rich music school kid vibe there sometimes where it seems that members are trying to show off their ā€œacademic-nessā€ and lately many discussions are being forced into a philosophical discussion about privilege and such. Some good stuff there though and a few genuinely good people.

For modular advice Muffs is the best IMO. Also the BST section can be a help starting out.

Have you seen knobs’ video series (YouTube) on ā€œWhy to Modularā€? It’s up to eight ā€œepisodesā€ right now and is actually really good for people thinking about taking the plunge. Wish it were around back in 2014 when I went on the modular meander.

Probably better off… On the other side people are never satisfied and always want more tracks, like 16 instead of 8 or whatever…:joy:

Poverty and ignorance are its own form of ā€˜creative limitations’… but hey, I still always cheer for the little sound engines that could.
