I’m really productive at the moment, and I’ve hit that point on the curve where I’ve found a workflow for a project that works. I’ve found a lot of success by starting out with the basic sounds of track, and sketching out an arrangement and recording it in one longer session. Then, I put it in a Foobar play list and do the same with a different thing in the next session, revisiting and listening to the playlist in between work sessions.
I’ve found my actual hit rate is fairly low, but by spacing out the times that I return to my demos I’ve been really able to zone in on what works and what doesn’t, and because I am working with song mode on my DT for the composition and arrangement, I am able to just copy the patterns used to another bank of the project and deconstruct it and rebuild quickly, allowing me to make lots of numbered variations and versions.
I’ve discarded a lot of stuff along the way, entire songs at some points, but from 7 or so songs, I have 2 really promising ones that are now fairly close to doing exactly what I want. The discarded tracks are great raw materials though, and I plan on using them now to repeat the process.
